Here's my question: could we create another internet? What if a new root was created?

Technically, it's no problem. Logistically, though, what could happen with it? If the UN starts imposing it's rule on the internet, will corporations support it?

Thats the issue. If the UN takes over, the effect on the economy would be immeasurable.

There is an Internet 2 being created. I don't know the details but I have heard about it.

Well, there was an effort to create an alternate root DNS system when network solutions first was handed control of the root DNS servers called alternic. It ran into quite a few difficulties.

Personally, I'd not mind seeing a rival to the current system make some headway. Technically, it could be done, but, like you said, the logistics of it are rather large hurdles.

Perhaps when (not if, but when) the UN siezes control of name resolution, we'll see some movement on the issue.
