From: Promed te: Sat 2 Jul 2005 From: Lewis B. Sckolnick Source: Seattle Post-Intelligence [edited] Cold Stone ice cream linked to salmonella --------------------------------------------- 5 people in Washington have contracted food poisoning after eating cake batter-flavored ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery stores. The victims -- a woman in King County, a man in Whatcom County, 2 girls in Snohomish County and a woman in Spokane -- were infected with a strain of the salmonella bacteria called _Salmonella typhimurium_ (_Salmonella enterica_ serotype typhimurium), according to the state Department of Health. Cold Stone Creamery is voluntarily recalling the ice cream from its stores throughout the country. A teenage girl in Snohomish County was hospitalized briefly, but has recovered, according to state officials. A total of 15 cases of salmonellosis related to the ice cream shops have been reported in 4 states, the others being Oregon, Minnesota and Ohio, during the past month [June 2005]. -- Lewis B. Skolnik [More information is needed to define the source of the contamination, which occurred, presumably, after the milk was pasteurized. - Mod.LL]

"Border threats: Canada the source of next terrorist attack on U.S.?"
by BETH DUFF-BROWN and PAULINE ARRILLAGA
The Associated Press
ON THE U.S.-CANADA BORDER
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Canada's welcoming immigration policies have long drawn scrutiny from Americans, who fear a terrorist claiming refugee status could lie in wait to carry out a mission. That threat still exists, says David Harris, former chief of strategic planning for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Canada's counterpart to the CIA.
Harris asserts more than 50 terrorist organizations have a presence in Canada.
"Canada has essentially said, if you put your foot in Canada and you declare yourself a (Geneva Convention) refugee, then by and large you are," says Harris. "It means that we're quite susceptible to penetration."
Canada continues to admit 250,000 new immigrants and refugees annually. A Canadian government report notes that refugee claims can be delayed up to two years, meaning potentially dangerous applicants can disappear."
