"Shooting at federal courthouse"

By HECTOR CASTRO
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Seattle police officers shot a man armed with a hand grenade several times today and apparently killed him in the lobby of the federal courthouse at Seventh Avenue and Stewart Street.

The man also wore a backpack in front of his chest. Officers with the Seattle Police Department's bomb squad were checking the backpack, but it did not appear to contain explosives, Chief Gil Kerlikowske said.

The grenade itself might not have contained explosives, but "looked like a real WWII grenade," he said.

At the same time, bomb-sniffing dogs were being used outside the courthouse to check cars parked nearby.

Police were called to the courthouse before noon and found a man dressed in camouflage and holding a grenade. They fired multiple times, and the man collapsed with the grenade in his hand, Kerlikowske said."
