The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

"Colombians suspect Irishmen may be hiding in Cuba"
Sat Jul 9, 2005 07:27 PM BST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - Colombian authorities suspect three Irishmen convicted of training Marxist rebels in bomb-making techniques might be hiding out in Cuba, a local Interpol official said on Saturday.

"We have intelligence reports to that effect," Victor Cruz told local Caracol Television, adding that Interpol had asked Cuba to see if it can find the three men the Colombian government says are Irish Republican Army guerrillas.

Jim Monaghan, Niall Connolly and Martin McCauley disappeared after being allowed out of a Bogota prison a year ago following their acquittal -- later reversed -- on charges of helping members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC."

Where was I reading just today that over 40,000 suicide bombers have been recruited for use on American soil???? Some terror organization made that announcement. I

IIRC, Iran has made the claim in an effort to deter any US actions against their nuclear capabilities. To coordinate that many people across the US would be a logistical / communications nightmare. However, I do not discount the core threat that they could potentially have sleepers here.

Thanks for all the info! You really provided some very interesting tid bits.

I had no idea that insanity by Traficant accusing the CIA of the bombing of the Pan Am Flight 103.

Task Force Baghdad Secures Car-Bomb Site

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2005 – Task Force Baghdad soldiers secured a site about 15 kilometers north of Baghdad after a terrorist detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device July 8.
Four soldiers were injured in the attack and were evacuated to a medical facility.

The car-bomb driver approached the task force patrol from the rear and struck the back of the trail vehicle before detonating.

Military officials report that several shops in the area were damaged by the blast.

"The terrorists continue to show their disregard for the Iraqi people and the sovereignty of the Iraqi nation. In this particular attack, the suicide car bomber burned down a series of shops in Sheik Amir Village," said Col. David Bishop, commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division.

The incident is under investigation.

In two separate incidents, also on July 8 in east Baghdad, Iraqis turned the tables and took a deliberate stand against terror.

In the first incident, a local citizen observed terrorists placing a roadside bomb and provided a tip to the Iraqi police. The police responded, cordoned off the area and coordinated with the 720th Military Police Battalion and a coalition explosive ordnance disposal team to disable the bomb. EOD safely destroyed the bomb with a controlled detonation.

The improvised explosive device consisted of a 125 mm tank round with a remote-controlled device.

The second incident occurred when an Iraqi civilian provided information on an illegal weapons dealer.

Elements of 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, responded and captured the weapons dealer who possessed a sniper rifle, a submachine gun and three AK-47 rifles.

"Once again, the people of Iraq have shown they will not tolerate anti-Iraqi forces operating in their neighborhoods," said Staff Sgt. Craig Zentkovich, 2nd Brigade Combat Team spokesman.

On July 7, Iraqi police patrolling in Baghdad's Ghazaliyah area stopped a suspected vehicle-borne IED carrying three suspected terrorists.

After police secured the site around the car, the vehicle ran past police barriers and into a nearby police compound.

The police opened fire on the vehicle, killing all three occupants before they could detonate the car bomb. One compound guard reported he'd seen one terrorist trying to trigger a detonation device before being shot.

Upon closer inspection of the vehicle, police discovered four 55-gallon drums connected to the car battery. The drums contained 600 pounds of homemade explosives, said Task Force Baghdad officials.

The drums were later destroyed in a controlled detonation by a Task Force Baghdad EOD team.

"Thanks to some quick-thinking Iraqi police, many lives were saved tonight," said Lt. Col. Clifford Kent, Task Force Baghdad spokesman. "This is just one more example of the firm stance Iraqi people and their security forces are taking against terrorism."

That same day in East Baghdad's Zafaraniya district, a resident reported the location of two 155-millimeter artillery rounds to a patrol from 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

1st Lt. Terry J. Rivera, the patrol leader, immediately recognized these artillery rounds as the same type used by terrorists to make roadside and car bombs.

Rivera cordoned off the area for the safety of the local population and called in an EOD, which detonated the 100-pound rounds with no damage to local property or residents.

"The local Iraqi comments about increased security due to improved (Iraqi security force) capability and resolve are not empty statements," said Lt. Col. Steven Merkel, 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery's commander. "The common citizen is now stepping forward and helping the Iraqi security forces and coalition forces win the right for their families to walk the streets in peace.

"The destruction of these potential IEDs due to the information provided by a Zafaraniya resident is a living example of this increase in security," Merkel added. "Their willingness to help shows great promise for the future of Iraq."

In the past two months, the Iraqi 2nd Public Order Brigade, along with the U.S. Field Artillery's 1st battalion, conducted eight joint operations targeting anti-Iraqi forces.

Military officials said that while these operations produced some immediate results, the long-term effects are just now beginning to be felt.

In other news, Marines from 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 8, detained 22 suspected terrorists during targeted raid operations near Fallujah.

Operation Scimitar, also known as Operation Qmtia, began July 7th in Zaidon, 30 kilometers southeast of Fallujah. About 100 Iraqi soldiers and 500 U.S. Marines are conducting security operations to deny anti-Iraqi sanctuary for planning, training and storing ammunition.

The operation follows a series of counter-terrorism operations initiated by Marines in Al Anbar, Iraq. These operations are designed to disrupt terrorist activity.

The last large-scale Marine Operation Saif, or Sword, was conducted in the Hit-Haditha corridor June 28 to July 7.

Thanks for the link to the article on FoxNews. Well, so much for the reliability of Newshounds.us. They claimed the article wasn't there any more, but as I mentioned, their purpose seems to be to try to discredit FoxNews.

How does one do that? With a jammer? Or is it a much more compact and direct cell area and therefore a much simpler process like closing down a few cellular transmitters?

Jammers would cause too much bleed-over interference, therefore the FCC would get their knickers in a knot. Most likely there are antennas within the subway, since the earth and building materials would block signals to surface antennas. I wouldn't be too difficult to shut down these antennas, just pull the plug.

Focusing on a few details...

JIHAD WATCH.org (KTVU.com): "LODI TERROR SUSPECTS SAY SIX OTHERS ATTENDED CAMP" (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The pair also told investigators that six others attended the camp, according to federal court documents obtained by The Sacramento Bee. There they were trained to target financial institutions and government buildings in the United States, according to the documents.") (July 9, 2005)

Police said Saturday they had arrested 142 people in a two-day anti-terrorism security sweep around Milan prompted by the bombings two days earlier in London.

Excellent response. This activity would cause any activated terrorist to pause and take a double look - even to the point of calling off an operation if they feared they might be monitored.

OPINION - SPECULATION: I agree.

We must remember though (and I know you do); that they will
probably regroup/recruit and do it somewhere else.

Portugal plane evacuated in security alert
10 July 2005

LISBON - Passengers on a TAP Portugal flight from Lisbon to London were evacuated before take-off overnight so a bomb squad could search the airliner but no explosive device was found, police said on Sunday.

The commander of TAP Flight 340 had become suspicious of three Albanian passengers and the trio were later arrested for carrying false passports, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman did not have any immediate details on the total number of passengers involved or the type of plane.

"New Qaeda-linked "jihadi" group in Somalia"
Reuters ^ | Jul 10, 2005 | Andrew Cawthorne

Posted on 07/09/2005 9:05:33 PM PDT by Ooh-Ah

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NAIROBI (Reuters) - A new group of al Qaeda-linked "jihadis" or "holy warriors" has won a foothold in Somalia and though small may flourish if stable rule does not return to the anarchic Horn of Africa nation, a report said on Sunday.

The "new, ruthless independent jihadi network" is run from the capital Mogadishu by a militia boss trained in Afghanistan and has already killed several foreign aid workers, the International Crisis Group (ICG) think-tank said.

"Ultimately, the threat of jihadi terrorism from Somalia can only be addressed through the restoration of stable, legitimate and functional government," added the ICG document, seen by Reuters in advance of its formal release this week.

Western security services have long viewed lawless Somalia as a haven for terrorists. Warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and took over the country in 1991.

Somalia-based al Qaeda operatives were thought involved in two suicide attacks in neighbouring Kenya that killed 224 at the U.S. embassy in 1998 and 15 at an Israeli-owned hotel in 2002.

A 14th attempt to re-establish government since 1991 is currently underway. But an interim administration that has just relocated to Somalia from Kenya is riven by factional rivalry."
