The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

RUSSIAN BELIEVERS GET FIVE DAYS IN PRISON FOR DEMANDING THEIR RIGHTS

By Jeremy Reynalds
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

MOSCOW, RUSSIA (ANS) -- A third member of the 1000-strong Emmanuel Pentecostal Church has been sentenced to five days' imprisonment.

According to Forum 18 News Service, a Moscow court passed the sentence against the individual for taking part in what the city authorities maintain was an unsanctioned demonstration in support of believers' rights.

The Protestant church members said they were protesting against general discrimination they are facing, and specifically the Moscow authorities' refusal to allow their church to build or acquire a building in the Russian capital.

In what lawyer Vladimir Ryakhovsky described to Forum 18 News Service as “a parody of justice,” church administrator Yuri Popov joined pastors Ilya Astafyev and Aleksandr Purshaga - sentenced on June 6 and June 7 respectively - in temporary detention cells in central Moscow.

Judge Aleksandra Kovalevskaya also fined other believers who took part in the demonstration.

According to Forum 18, at the start of the June 10 court session, Judge Kovalevskaya dismissed Ryakhovsky's calls for a postponement until after a separate appeal could determine whether the church's daily demonstration opposite the Moscow mayor's office from May 30 to June 3 was lawful.

Forum 18 reported that Emmanuel Church officials turned in a request to hold a demonstration 10 days in advance of the event, as required by law. They claimed not to have received any objection by the authorities about the proposed location for the event within three days of submitting the request, also a legal requirement.

Forum 18 was told by a church official that it was only while in police detention on May 30 that demonstrators first saw a document alerting them to problems with the event.

Issued by the Moscow city authorities, Forum 18 reported the document read that as the area opposite the mayor's office had been designated as a parking lot, the event must be moved to the site where the church held a much larger demonstration on May 22.

A church official told Forum 18 that the document had a date of May 26 - three days after the deadline for authorities to let the church know there was a problem with the proposed demonstration site - as well as an official's handwritten note requesting security measures be taken to prevent demonstrators from gathering opposite the mayor's office.

“Why would they do that unless they knew we hadn't been informed of the change?” the church official told Forum 18. “It was a provocation.”

Forum 18 reported that at the June 10 court hearing the official who received the church's request on May 20, Yelena Polyakova, claimed she had told the organisers when they submitted it that the site opposite the mayor's office was not available for demonstrations. “We never give that place to anyone,” Forum 18 reported she told the court, “because it is a (parking lot.”)

While acknowledging that there was no official document to support her statement, Forum 18 reported that Polyakova also claimed it qualified as a good reason to move the meeting. However, she was unable to explain why, if what she said were true, the church's notification was officially processed and a formal reply drafted by a senior official on May 26. Later in the court session, Forum 18 reported, a police officer admitted that the area where the demonstration had taken place was not part of the parking lot.

However, Judge Kovalevskaya still passed the sentence on Popov. Forum 18 reported that Popov had unsuccessfully tried to show he had been unlawfully detained 30 minutes before the official starting time for the May 30 demonstration, when he approached church member Sergei Matveyenko in order to clarify the law with a police officer questioning him.

Popov said that Matveyenko was demonstrating alone, Forum 18 reported, an activity for which official permission is not required.

Popov claimed, Forum 18 reported, that police officer Major Aleksandr Krylov had initially acknowledged this was the case. Krylov, however, told the court, Forum 18 reported, that “Popov was with Matveyenko - it was a group of citizens, two. I told them to stop demonstrating and they didn't.”

When Ryakhovsky asked whether he was sure there were two demonstrators as detention statements claimed there to be three, Forum 18 reported Krylov replied, ”Now there'll be a third. There'll be however many there needs to be.”

"Iraqis detained in dawn raids for links to Kurdish terrorists"
expatica.com ^ | 14 June 2005 | expatica

Posted on 06/15/2005 3:22:21 AM PDT by Cornpone

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "KARLSRUHE - Federal agents staged pre-dawn raids on a score of homes and buildings across Germany on Tuesday, rounding up three Iraqi nationals on suspicion of links to the outlawed Ansar al Islam Kurdish guerrilla group.

The three face criminal charges of raising money and serving as couriers for a terrorist group. Another 11 suspects were detained briefly but later released after questioning.

Chief Federal Prosecutor Kay Nehm said the raids were carried out in eight cities, including Nuremberg, Munich and Stuttgart. One site in Basel, Switzerland, was also searched, the prosecutor's office said.

The three men were identified only as 39-year-old Dieman A.I. from Nuremberg, 33-year-old Kawa H. from Munich and 43-year-old Najat O. from Buehl.

They stand accused of having funnelled money to the terrorist group Ansar al-Islam, parent organisation to Ansar al-Sunna operating in Iraq.

Ansar al-Sunna has claimed responsibility for decapitating 12 Nepalese workers in Iraq and bombing a United States military mess tent in Mosul that killed 22 people."

Nuclear threat initiative ^ | 5/27/05 | Sam Nunn

What a disturbing flik. I received mine yesterday in the mail. I find it hard to believe that the Canadian border agent didn't pick anything with his radiation detector. But if only a thin layer of lead is all it takes, well . . . I also found it curious that they kept saying regarding the nukes "only two" . . .

Murder Suspect an Illegal Alien
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

A murder suspect arrested in Northumberland County was in the country illegally.

U.S. Immigration and Customs officials said Fredil Rodriquez of Milton should have been deported in 2000. According to officials, Rodriquez was given a deportation notice five years ago in Texas but he never showed up for court. His wife confirmed to police he was in the country illegally.

Rodriquez admitted killing his neighbor, Carly Snyder, 20. She was found stabbed to death in her home Friday. A make-shift memorial lies on the doorstep of her home.

I was pinged to this article last night by another FReeper.
This is not really off topic.

Killing unborn kids (abortion) does not seem to be shocking
to the "my choice is death" crowd.

I read the article about the abortionist eating fetuses and wondered
if it would shock the "my choice is death" crowd and sadly concluded,
probably not. They would probably figure the abortionist had poor taste
in his eating habits and may have a vitamin deficiency. In conclusion, all
bad guys are victims of ____ (fill in the blanks). (/end of rant)

Al-Qaeda-linked ex-general arrested in Iraq
AFP ^

Posted on 06/15/2005 12:45:27 PM PDT by jmc1969

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A former Iraqi general believed to be Jordanian extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's "military adviser" was arrested west of Baghdad.

Abed Dawood Suleiman and his son, former army captain Raed Abed Dawood, were picked up in a morning raid on their house in Khalidiya, west of Baghdad, a defense ministry source said Wednesday.

Zarqawi, the Al-Qaeda frontman in Iraq, is believed to have masterminded much of the country's violence, including car and suicide bombings that killed almost 700 people in May alone. He has a 25-million-dollar price on his head.

"Abed Dawood Suleiman is considered to be Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's military aide in charge of Mohammed's Army," one of the armed groups linked with Iraq's deadly insurgency, the source said.
