TAMPA, Fla. -- In an attack that's rattled even veteran detectives, police in Florida said a 7-year-old boy has confessed to beating his baby sister to death.
Investigators said the boy was jealous of the attention the infant was getting and upset by her crying. They said the boy beat the baby with his fists, feet and a two-by-four.
The attack occurred in Tampa, while the boy was visiting his father.
Police said the father and his girlfriend were outside with neighbors when the boy came out and told them the baby was "bleeding." They said the seven-month-old had a bloody nose, and wasn't breathing. The parents rushed the baby to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A spokesman said detectives noted they'd never seen someone so young "show so much violence and so little remorse."
I suppose that is possible. Be that as it may, let me offer you a quote from Donna Shalala. These are her own words. The speech is from 1999 and can be found here. Here is a quote that appears near the end of the speech.
I realize that I'm preaching to the choir-because all of you here certainly make everyone's children your responsibility. We need to convince others that our young people are everyone's responsibility.
The rest of the speech is about exanding, at great expense, FEDERAL child welfare laws. Her justification for this expansion of federal power and reduction of parental rights are two specific stories of horrific abuse - just like the ones we are discussing here on FR.
This speech is just one example.
Everything you say there is probably true. However, without looking, guess how many infants were murdered (not counting abortions) in the US in 2002?
The answer is 586, according to the DOJ numbers. Now, let's go back and look at your second sentence from above.
Parents are the more probable killers in too many cases when discussing infant deaths.
It is my opinion that, while your statement may be true, it completely mischaracterizes the severity of the problem (i.e. it makes it sound like every parent is a suspect even though, out of the millions of parents in the US, we are talking about 586 in 2002).
I think the only reason divorce rates are falling is because we are seeing way too many IMO bastard children these days.
Why get married when there's no need to? It'll only end in a divorce anyway.
I'm happy to say the Mrs and I have survived 27 years so far without doing physical harm to each other. She keeps saying she'll poison me someday, as soon as she finds someone to rub her feet in the evening, I suppose my time will be done for.
I think the opposite of what she is preaching is what is needed. We need to strengthen the family unit, make it more affordable. There is far too much stress on young couples trying to start a life these days.
keep those hands strong!!!!! :)
Congratulations! A child with a loving, stable, two-parent home has a great advantage over those who do not have that environment.
I don't think we would have runaways, throwaways or homeless youths if the parents were better prepared for raising their children. I was almost 31 when our 1st daughter was born and my wife was 28. Much easier than doing it if we were 21 and 18.
sorry for the stray line.
Thanks for the vocab lesson, my opinion stands.
I do honor your position of defending these parents, I do not.
Statistics on murders BY children are exceedingly difficult to find. I did however find the following very interesting.
Incarceration of children
2,000 studies show that children from single-mother households (SMHs), compared to children with father present, are more likely to go to prison by twenty times.
Suicide by children
Fatherless children are more likely to commit suicide by five times.
Murder by children
Fatherless children are more likely to commit murder by eight times.
Children's behavioral problems
Fatherless children are more likely to have behavioral problems by twenty times.
Likelihood of children to become rapists
Fatherless children are more likely to become rapists by fourteen times.
Become runaways
Fatherless children are more likely to run away by thirty two times.
Drug users
Fatherless children are more likely to abuse chemical substances by ten times.
Drop outs
Fatherless children are more likely to drop out of high school by nine times.

I think I saw that episode on Law and Order.
And...????
Are you IQ challenged?
Rhetorical question...don't bother responding.
whether he does have the mental capacity or not, "why the heck is the boy so violent?" what he did was extremely violent, whether he did it to a dog, a piece of furniture or a tree...
how does a 7-year old have that much anger in him? (i fault his parents for that.)
Maybe Pete is right, don't you have this story confused with another thread about a 9 year-old girl and a neighbor child?
My wife and I dated for five years before we ever had any serious talks about getting married. Kids? They came after we had stable jobs, bought the house, the cars and had a decent bank account.
We never understood the rush to get married or become parents that we saw in so many of our friends. When we got married all our friends were positive she was pregnant because we announced it in October and got married in December. I'll bet lots of folks were upset that we didn't have any children for five more years. LOL
FreeRepublic is nothing more than a news source.
That's not to diminish the greatness of FreeRepublic.com but facts are facts.
The slower the newsday...the more tabloid-like it becomes.
WHOA!! Hold up.
I've helped raise 5 children and there's nothing wrong with putting your infant down to nap while I might be out in the backyard sipping an iced-tea on the deck talking over the fence with my neighbor.
And just because a baby cries for a few moments without you sprinting to it's crib doens't mean you're a "typical loser parent".
Buy a clue, will you?
This is where he lost the benefit of the doubt with me. I'm not saying what he did to that point is OK. But after he got the 2X4 he went from being a bad kid who didn't know his own strength to an evil kid who meant to do serious harm.
