Alarmist article from the Guardian. Personally, I think we SHOULD terraform Mars (preferably through private sector, that's another day's topic however) and here's reasons why:
Mars is similar to Earth in many ways-day length, has seasons, has water
Mars would be a New "New World"
Mars has most of the resources already to become Earthlike, and those it does not exist in comets nearby
By the time we have colonies established on Mars, our technology should make terraforming relatively easy (although time-consuming and somewhat costly)
It would be damn cool.
Instead of Red States...we'd have an entire Red Planet!

A fresh spectroscopic study shows olivine is present at the surface of Mars in greater quantity than previously thought. Olivine decomposes in the presence of water.

Do you want to tell them about the space station or should I?

Isn't amazing that your tax dollars support the useless work of all these opponents and proponents of massive government expenditure?

Personally, I think this whole article is a joke. This is mankind thinking they can replicate Genesis 1:1.
Nasa can't even bring a spaceship into our atmosphere at a slow enough speed so that it won't burn up... but they're going to create a whole planet's atmosphere and liveable environment??
Yeah right.

Mars has a dead core.
Mars thus has no Van Allen Belt.
What would terraforming do to solve the solar radiation problems?

We are mucking up this world at an incredible pace at the same time that we are talking about screwing up another planet. Need to remember the name of Paul Murdin for future reference, he is permanently in the moonbat column now.

First off, this is a really old idea. But I like it a lot.
Secondly, . . .
"The idea of terraforming Mars is extreme, but it is not cranky - that is the truly horrible thing about it," said Paul Murdin, of the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge. "If it was just a silly science-fiction notion, you could laugh it off. But the idea is terribly real. That is why it is dreadful. We are mucking up this world at an incredible pace at the same time that we are talking about screwing up another planet."
. . . I find it incredible for a supposed man of science to have such a moronic view of terraforming. Your comment about have a "Red planet" is dead on. This dipwad is assuredly a blue state weener kind of guy.

I'm afraid that at the rate of our understanding of gene modification techniques is progressing, someone will propose that rather than spend generations and enormous sums terraforming Mars, it will be far quicker and cheaper to breed humans capable of living there by withstanding the thin atmosphere and the cold temperatures.
Perhaps the result will look like a Wookie, only with lungs the size of pillows. While we're at it, we should consider making them all gay to encourage emigration from San Francisco.

These wackos make me sick. Mars is already screwed up. If there was a chance to make it usable, what logical being could oppose it? A Martian?
The same applies to the ANWAR. The enviro terrorist just hate themselves and humanity. It doesn't matter how screwed up anything is, as long as humans didn't do it. sickos.
