KARACHI (Reuters) - Six people, including three assailants, were killed in a suicide bomb attack on Monday at a minority Shi'ite Muslim mosque in southern Pakistan, the latest religious violence to rock the country, officials said.
At least 18 other people were wounded, four seriously, in the attack at the Mandinatul Ilm mosque in a middle-class area of the port city of Karachi, hospital officials said.
It was the latest incident of religious violence to hit a key ally in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. It came after a suicide bombing at a Muslim festival in the capital Islamabad on Friday killed at least 19 people, mostly Shi'ite Muslims.
Provincial spokesman Salahuddin Haider said three of the dead were assailants and one was a policeman, while hospital officials said two worshippers died in hospital.
Haider said one of the attackers blew himself up.
City police officer Asif Aijaz Shaikh said one attacker snatched a gun from a police guard at the mosque and shot him dead.
"When they heard the fire, the two other police guards responded and opened fire on the two assailants standing outside the mosque, killing them.
"At this point, the assailant inside the mosque blew himself up," Shaikh said.
Rizwan Edhi of the Edhi Welfare Trust emergency service said groups of people angered by the blast set fire to a nearby outlet of the American fast food chain KFC and also attacked a hospital.
PROVINCIAL OPPOSITION LEADER KILLED
Hours earlier in Karachi, unknown assailants killed a provincial leader from the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Islamic opposition alliance, police said.
Aslam Mujahid, deputy chief of Jamaat-e-Islami in Karachi, was kidnapped early in the day and his bullet-riddled body was later found in an abandoned car in the east of the city.
Mairaj-ul-Huda, head of Jamaat-e-Islami's Karachi wing, said Mujahid was kidnapped after the funeral of a party member.
"Two hours later we received a phone call from the area Nazim that his body has been in a car."
Huda said the party suspected the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, a rival regional party that is a member of the governing national coalition, was behind the killing.
"The city has been put on high alert," Rauf Siddiqui, home minister for the southern province of Sindh, of which Karachi is the capital, told Reuters.
"We have ordered all police stations to remain on high alert and have asked the police and rangers to increase patrolling."
"The blast, and the killing of Aslam Mujahid earlier in the day show that all these activities are planned," he said, adding that a reward of 2.5 million rupees ($42,000) had been offered for information about Mujahid's assassins.
More than 100 people have been killed in tit-for-tat attacks by majority Sunni and Shi'ite militants in the past year.
Most of the attacks have been blamed on Sunni militant groups with links to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network which have been angered by Pakistan's support for Washington's war on terrorism.

Larry King aired a pre-taped interview with Vice President Dick Cheney on CNN this evening.
On one segment, Cheney said that during Hamid Karzai's state visit to Washington, the first repurcussions of the false Newsweek "Koran desecration" at Gitmo story were being acted out in various locations in Afghanistan.
Cheney quoted Karzai as having told him and President Bush that in Jalalabad in the northern part of his country, inflamed rioters attacked one of their own Afghan cultural centers and burned it to the ground.
Inside of the cultural center there had been over 400 especially fine copies of the Koran.
"They destroyed over 400 copies of the Koran," Cheney told Larry King, ".......all because of a false report that one copy of the Koran had been flushed down a toilet at Guantanamo."
Cheney then cracked his world famous wry, crooked smile and that segment ended!
How typical. Muslims kill Muslims and the proper response is to go burn down a KFC ( undoubtedly a Muslim-owned franchise) and go for a hospital next!

Ah-h-h, but they are smart enough, and sophisticated enough, to show up every year like clockwork and check in, en masse, to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, take over one or two entire floors, and spend weeks seeing the finest physicians at Sinai (can't spell) hospital. Whereas, their camel drivers back home...well, their medical care is no doubt provided by praying to the Prophet.

If you've ever noticed their eyes, they have that 'nobody's home look.' Almost every one of the 9-11 hijackers had that spaced out look in their eyes. I saw that same look on the faces of many of the men who burned the bodies in Fallujah, and I'd be willing to bet that our troops have seen that same look on many of the terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. The entire cult's "scripture" revolves around Jinn, demons sorcerers,soothsayers, etc. "Allah' their rock diety, spends most of his time in hell stoking the fires with human corpses, waiting there for you when you die, he then tortures you, roasting your skin off, putting it back on and doing it over and over, shoving red hot iron rods down your throat, forcing you to drink boiling pitch, etc. etc.
Does that give you a clue as to who "Allah" really is? If you read the Koran, and supporting "scripture" it becomes clear that Muhammad's demented diety is Satan. He's the complete opposite of Yahweh. who else would want to kill off God's people, and claim their souls?
