France and Britain are nukes, and that is power. PeriodNukes are power only to the degree that others believe you will use them. I doubt anyone in this world seriously believes GB or France could muster the political will to set one off.

Excellent, as always.

"Europe" is an indulgence the real Europe can't afford. The followers recognise that, even if the leaders don't.But all the leaders really care about is having more power. They don't care if the people starve, freeze, or even revolt, as long as the New York Times and Le Monde and some of the other socialist organs spin the crushing of the revolt as a victory for progressivism. They just want to be in charge of an empire.

At the risk of starting WWWIII ( or has it already started?) - why is it that Quid always seems to find Steyn articles and then unneccessarily excerpts his genius prose and then along comes Pokey to post the whole piece? Quid can't you just ping Pokey so he he can post the whole piece? Is this a love-hate thing? Can't we all just get along?
Honestly, I thank you both for posting these pieces but I know when I find a Steyn post by quid to just page down til I find pokey's complete article by Steyn. Weird - but cute. ;-)

A minor setback will not stop the intigration of countries.

Another great piece by Steyn.
However, he like everyone else is focusing on the nay sayers. There was a poll by Sofres looking at the reasons for people voting like they did. 52% of the voters who voted yes, did so to strengthen "Europe" in face of global challenges from great powers like China, India.....and the USA.
The French No's may not like US-free market economics. The yes's don't like the USA, period.

"The French rejected the Constitution because the original 11 members of the Union has expanded to 23."
- I can remember when this whole "Europe" as a country got started. It began very sensibly (and very simply) with the notion of a free trade zone, to reduce customs barriers, paperwork, tariffs and ultimately deliver cheaper goods to the people.
Somehow, and led by the french, it became this monstrous, unaccountable, nanny state bureaucracy that wanted to dictate, from Brussels, laws that would govern everything from gun ownership to the contents of sausage.
I suspect that from the start the french saw it as a vehicle to break the US influence within Europe and to set itself up as the real power behind the united Europe throne so to speak.
You cannot build a country based on a constitution which has behind it a hidden agenda.
