Some of it was for the wrong reasons, but not all. Alot of it was wanting to maintain France's independence.

The right to surrender shall not be infringed.

French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie described the French rejection as "a defeat for France and a defeat for Europe".

Ah Michele, you're French, you should be used to losing...anyhow, shut up and put some ice on it....

The United states have never even remotely experience a similar amount of destruction, loss of life and overall misery. You simply haven't.

I guess you weren't around for the civil war. Oh well, that was American blood spilled on American soil, so we can ignore that as insignificant.

The carnage you talk about in Europe was of your own making, so why do demand instantaneous sympathy?

It's not a repudiation of socialism or one-worlders. French workers didn't get their cut and told Chirac what they thought of it at the box

De facto it is--because it puts a major barrier in their way.

Anytime the Internationalist elite fall on their face it is a good day for individual freedom and rights around the globe.

I hope the French keep holding out for the best deal they can get--forever!

I may be hopelessly dense, but I don't see how such disparate social welfare systems, or economic policies, can possibly exist for long in the EU as this Constitution is crafted.

There will be immediate pressure to bring them into line with each other, and for the central government to conduct most of the taxation and law making to get into accordance with this Constitution. The central bureaucracy has far too much power in comparison with the nations' governments, and in order to keep the currency somewhat stable and people from migrating rapidly from "bad" to "good" situations (however they would define that) that central government will use that power and rapidly force an equalization of such programs and tax policy.

If there is to be a successful bringing together of Europe, I believe it has to be more like our Confederation of States - a very weak central government with very limited and defined powers and responsibility (centralized military? guidelines suggested for laws the nations adopt voluntarily? etc.) and most power remaining with the nations. That situation would have to exist for some time, and gradually be expanded as the countries grow more interdependent and similarly based. This EU concept tried to go too fast toward unification, I think, possibly because of the french Euroweenies pressure of trying to challenge the US.

Well ain't this a kick in the pants.

Senor Two Faced Cirac (otherwise know as Pepe Le Pew) sticks it to Bush.

Now the people of France stick it to Chirac.

Got to love those dissident French voters.

Even they could see the hand writing on the wall of what was coming.

Well like Senor Chirac you certainly have not won many friends with your opening remarks.

Socialism is always a flop and one that i fear very little.

A strong EU was not and is not in Americas or the worlds best interest.

Me too. I thought it would be close, and the Eurocrats would cheat. Given all that was raise against a "Non" vote it is a true mandate, or so it would seem to me.

That's bad news, not excellent.

There is strength in unity for our Mother Continent. Of course, first they have to get rid of socialistic way of doing and thinking, and, of course, stop the immigration from Africa, Muslim/Arab countries and other non-Western countries. Actually, immigration to Europe is not as bad a problem as it is here in the States, still it's better to conserve our beloved continent's original demographics.

And why the hell is this a good thing? There are many reasons to disagree with the proposed EU constitution. However, a divided Europe is not good for the US. A strong European economy is good for you, me, Europe, and the US.

Pls explain why you think a divided Europe is a good thing?

Well, let me put it this way: if he had had any doubts about it, he would have gone around the voters, and worried about the political consequences later.

20/20 hindsight says he would have been better off doing that. As it stands right now, he's finished politically...
