Man held in baby death

CARBONDALE (PA) - A 23-year-old Throop man was charged Wednesday night with killing his girlfriend's 14-month-old son in a fit of anger. Justin Christopher Kinne, 146 Harriet St., was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Sean McGraw on a single count of criminal homicide. He was remanded to Lackawanna County Prison without bail.

The charge came about 36 hours after Zachary Scott died at Community Medical Center in Scranton. An ambulance brought the toddler to the Scranton hospital around noon Tuesday, after Mr. Kinne found him unresponsive at the home they shared with Christine Mangiarcina.

Zachary died about 30 minutes later, succumbing to multiple traumatic injuries, according to Lackawanna County Chief Deputy Coroner Joseph Swoboda.

The injuries occurred days before while he was being watched by Mr. Kinne, according to court records.

An emergency room nurse noticed bruises on the child's body and notified law enforcement officials, said Mr. Swoboda. That call triggered a two-day investigation that led police to Mr. Kinne, who had been babysitting Zachary and his 3-year-old sister over the past few weeks.

An autopsy conducted Wednesday concluded the child suffered blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen. And police affidavits paint a picture of babysitting gone horrifically awry.

According to the affidavit:

Earlier in the week, Mr. Kinne got into an argument with his ex-wife over the telephone as he watched the two small children. The conversation took a sour turn. Kneeling on the floor, Mr. Kinne hung up the phone as Zachary walked toward him. The child struck him with a baby bottle.

Mr. Kinne unloaded on Zachary, punching the toddler in the stomach, hurling him backward into a wood-framed glass coffee table. Mr. Kinne noticed the subsequent bruise on Zachary's head, applied ice and told no one about the incident.

Days later, Mr. Kinne would call 9-1-1, after the nornally active child became sluggish, then unresponsive.

Ms. Mangiarcina, interviewed by police Tuesday, said she had noticed bruises on the infant over the past month. She had asked Mr. Kinne, who had lived at the Throop house for only a few weeks, to care for the two children while she was at work.

He had offered various explanations for the injuries when pressed by Ms. Mangiarcina, she told police.

Mr. Swoboda praised the hospital nurse who first alerted law enforcement.

"She basically set the whole thing in motion," he said. "Those people are our eyes and ears."

Judge McGraw scheduled a June 1 preliminary hearing for Mr. Kinne.

Hurt a kid, kill a kid, rape a kid...you die.

And no, I don't want him to suffer, I just want him off the planet.

There was a scientist on the radio last week who said children are 150 times more likely to be injured by a mother's lover who is not the child's father.

Hey buddy, you're going to a place where you'll get to know lots and lots of tougher guys. I'm sure they'll be glad to make your acquaintance!

Baby killers have a VERY hard time in prison, from what I hear.

Yep.  See, a lot of people who end up in prison started out as abused children.  I guess I could see how they'd take umbrage with people who committ that crime, and how all that time on your hands might make you liable to act on  that umbrage.

Justin, your time in prison will only seem like hell.  When they finish you off, that's when the real punishment will begin, and you'll deserve every bit of it.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,

 it was probably sarcasm)

I hope this bastard is killed painfully no, he should be thrown in with the general prison population and forced to stay there the rest of his miserable life. He will find some people probably tougher than a toddler and he will pray for death, every day for years and years and years. That IMHO is justice. Prayers for the little one, so sad, no real chance and then this. I think my kids are wondering why I come home everyday and hug them, it feels like I am doing more and more of that with all of these sad sad tales.

Until they start really punishing mothers also, I'm afraid the trend will continue.

I call it tom-cat syndrome. I've had toms wipe out litters of kittens that weren't 'theirs'. Just cuz they weren't "THEIRS".

And I've seen the same happen with kids...whether it's mental, physical or sexual abuse. If the blood ain't there, neither is the bond or the desire to protect (I'm talking about lowlife scum types, not decent, good step-dads etc).

pretty common in nature...look what other Alpha males do once they become dominant over the old Alpha, the previous offspring usually die...

My two-year-old grandson was murdered with a kick to the stomach by the mother's jealous boyfriend several years ago. This hits so close to home it's hard for me to read about it...

Biologically unrelated adult males living in the home are the single greatest danger to a child's life. And that includes married stepfathers.

The killer's behavior shows an absence of any conscious.

I would suggest that their kind will not walk away because they are evil. And evils purpose is to destroy.

We've got a similar case in the safe socialist utopia of Toronto. The monster scalded and beat the six year old son of his girlfriend for 3 hours because the little boy wouldn't go to bed. The mother did nothing. She eventually took the boy on a bus where other riders noticed his injuries and called 911. (She claimed that was her plan because she feared her boyfriend.) The little guy was put into a medically induced coma and the good news today is he is out of the coma and improving.

Footnote: the monster had to be carried into court and was crying like a baby that the handcuffs were too tight. There is no earthly punishment sufficient for the likes of these guys.

Mom bearing some responsibility? You're darn right she does! This woman is a teacher, so you would think she's not stupid. This same woman saw MY son flipping her off behind her back, but didn't notice something was seriously wrong with her own baby.

Don't be so quick to judge without all the facts. NOTE: Most of these are hearsay and are unconfirmed. Steven Scott the father (of both children) would no longer babysit for this single mother. Neither would the girls step-mother who did not have a job and lived local to her step-daughters home. I hear she was a sub teacher, that she knew this guy for lesss than a month before letting him live at her home and watch her kids. For only 2 weeks he actually live in her home before killing her son. Possibly the reason that Steve didnt want to baby sit the kids. In her grief she has now given up custody of her daughter to Steve (the father of both children). Chris was divorced and has 2 kids of his own. When she mentioned to Chris about the bruises on BOTH children he made excuses and said that they were just wresting around and playing rough. Which she viewed them doing togher many times...jumping on each other, fighting & wrestling, seeming to have fun when she viewed them doing it. Chris had also stated that he would never harm her children as he had 2 of his own. Its easy to point fingers at the mother but I point the finger at EVERYONE....The step mother could have been more caring, the mother could have been more protective, the father could have had more responsibility for his kids.
