No, but perhaps misinterpreted. I never took that verse to imply that I should beat my children.
I don't take that verse "literally". I believe it means to lead and guide your children, and to discipline when needed. Discipline could take many forms. I believe God also wants us to reward our children for good behavior. References to the "rod" are found primarily in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Christ preaches compassion, love, and understanding, as does Paul.
Besides, bible was written by man. God gave us conscience. Personally, that is what leads me -- not some preacher/priest.
