I agree with John Podhoretz that politics in the real world calls for some compromise at least when a matter of principle is not involved. But hes dreaming if he really thinks the filibuster compromise struck last night in the Senate is a victory.

Extraordinary circumstances? You mean, like if the sun comes up in the east?
This is just like Lucy pulling away the football that Charlie Brown's trying to kick. "I won't pull it away again. I promise."
Uh-huh. These 7 Republicans are first-class dumba**es. I'm particularly disappointed in Lindsay Graham. You could expect it from most of the others who've 'distinguished' themselves in the recent past.
One does not necessarily follow from the other. And, the GOP does not control the timing of good and bad behavior by the DEMs. If the DEMs vote, no nuclear trigger. If the DEMs don't vote, nuclear trigger. They control the timing, not Frist, not the GOP. The misbehaing one contols the timing of misbehavior.
:-} It doesn't matter what you accept or don't accept Coop. What I wrote is the truth of the matter. Ralph Neas thinks the language of the deal has puyt us right wing whackos in our place. Harry Reid loves it. The conservatives in the senate hate it. If that's not enough cold water in the face to shake you out of the doldrums I don't know what is.
I haven't followed this closely but hasn't DeWine and Graham said they will vote for the Nuclear Option if the democrats break their deal? Now what that means I don't know but it sounds like the Nuclear option is still there if need be... Guess we'll have to see what happens down the road.
I'm like you I would prefer the 'point of order' been raised and decided at the juncture rather than at some SCOTUS nomination... jmo.
we conservatives had the whole enchilada on the Filibuster deal
If the GOP really felt that way, there would have been no compromise. Now I personally think the GOP would have prevailed in a nuke option, but I wouldn't have bet my house on it.
But the good news is Frist is not backing away from the nuke/constitutional option one bit.
It looks to me like the rats walked into a trap and the Republicans are actually better off now than they were a day ago.
As the Republicans shed their media-made image as frenzied extremists who are intent on nuking the Senate, etc., they get Bush's best nominees confirmed without a single shot being fired, and STILL get to keep their finger on the nuclear button.
They also somehow got the rats to throw the phrase "extraordinary circumstances" into the language, thereby providing perfect cover for at least two out of the seven Republicans who signed onto this deal to sign OFF of this deal and vote to "go nuclear" as Graham and DeWine have already said they would if the rats abuse that "extraordinary circumstances" excuse.
In other words, when the GOP finally does "go nuclear", the votes will be there.
You are making assumptions that cannot be proven. The "deal" only addresses these nominees. In the future, the Republicans reserve the right to act how they see fit if the Democrats filibuster under what Republicans do not agree are extraordinary circumstances.
Look at it from this angle, too...now next year we don't have to hear over the top discussions about how the GOP blew up the Senate. You know that was going to be club used by Dems and the MSM to thump the party. It won't happen now. That's good news.
Keep your powder dry.
We got something didn't we.
Wait till we get 3 more senators in 06.
Wait till we get 3 more senators in 08
Wait till we get 3 more senators in 10
Wait Wait Wait. Sooon very very soooooon. When you are 378 years old, we will get what we are waiting for.......
order 66.
John? McCain? Ugh. If you thought I was promoting McCain as a winner in this, I did something very wrong! LOL
I'd say the only true winners in this are the three judges, and maybe President Bush.
Okay, I agree with your points 6 & 7, although I think the number is closer to two than six (tossed overboard). (Even one being sacrificed will make me angry.)
Agreed
yep. Just keep waiting!
So you hope. And if the nuke option had failed?
In the coming weeks, as our judges get confirmed one after the other and the balance of power in the appellate courts tips in our favor, the naysayers will start realizing how much good this deal accomplished.
Frist just called for a roll call vote to limit debate on Owen. Over Reids objection. The POS Reid didn't want the dems on record voting against this.
Unfortunately for you, yes it does. You're trying to sway my opinion, and you have more work to do.
What I wrote is the truth of the matter
Maybe, but it's mostly in line with what I've been saying.
Owen will be confirmed later today. Frist is on a mission and will not be deterred. Try as McCain might, I think Frist will come out on top and McCain will regret this.
You sound like a advertisement for the GOP. The fact is that if it were not for thousands of us donating time, money, etc, these panzies and patsies would not even be there. Yet, they treat us like dirt.
The GOP sent me a request for a donation. I ripped it up and put two pennies in there with a statement: "Address the border and I will address you a check."
I'm not that optimistic yet, but I hope you're correct!
