How can you defend a guy that demonstrates weakness and cannot keep his party in line?

Nobody can keep a party "in line". NOBODY. It's not possible.
Fist (and I mean that more in the sexual sense than the combative) has demonstrated weakness, but keeping the egos of the Senate "in line" is probably beyond the realm of the possible.
It would seem that a strategy now would be to attempt to push through as many nominees as possible right now so the rats have to call "extraordinary circumstances" before everyone forgets that it was all about this deal so it's exposed as the political ploy that it is.
