We have seven Republican Senators who have betrayed their party, their country, and the Constitution.
They have accomplished "peace in our times" by allowing the Democrats to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in regard to the judicial nominees.
They have not only sold us out, but they sold us out for no gain. All they have accomplished is that the filibustering of nominees has merely been kicked down the road, to a time and place of the Democrats' choosing.
The filibuster, they tell us smugly, will only be used in "extraordinary" circumstances. To the Democrats, if a Bush judicial nominee is breathing, that is extraordinary.
From this point on, it is hereby decreed that these seven Republican weiniemeisters are to be hereby referred to as the "Neville Chamberlain Republicans" because, at great cost to the country and their own party, they have capitulated to an enemy bent on destroying them, in order to gain a false peace of no value.
Let history judge them rightly.

Isn't that the truth?? That is why I will no longer contribute to the RNC. If their donations drop, maybe we can starve that monster via their pocketbook. That being said, I want to stay on their mailing list, so every single time they send me a letter begging for money, I can send it right back (with the RNC paying the postage) with a note stating my disgust.

Maybe the RNC and the GOP senators will get the message when and if their money dries up. Since money drives politicians and political parties, that is the only thing they understand. Of course, if the GOP gets really desperate, they can go begging to George Soros!

It was with a heavy heart that I read the news of the deal ending the fight over filibusters, for a number of reasons:
1. President Bush has laid out an aggressive, broad agenda that begins to meet the challenges of our nation. Recent polls reflect citizens' disappointment, on both sides of the aisle, in acting at all. The deepest reservations though, must be reserved for Republicans, who it seems since 1994 have promised much but never seem to deliver. This interminable haggling over judges is just one more brick in the wall blocking advancement.
2. Even considering education reform, which on its present course is threatening to economically consume all of us even in its socially misguided decline, electing intelligent, fair, conservative judges must remain the single most important activity this government can perform. The Democrats seem to understand this; why not the Republicans? Do we not truly believe our own rhetoric? McCain must be off his rocker. He may be a great American, but he’s a terrible Republican.
3. As I see it, we've gained 3 judges we would have gained had the rule been changed, lost 2 we would have otherwise gained, and the filibuster lives on to be invoked again. After all these months of waiting, it is difficult for interested onlookers like me to see how we ‘won.’
4. With the war time world canvas providing an especially urgent backdrop to this Congress, we find backroom dealings even while we endlessly debate without seeming to get at the heart of the issues. Graham’s pandering to “…kids dying…” is disgusting in this milieu. Certainly our soldiers are dying for freedom and democracy, but they are not dying to have Meyer and Saad never have a vote. Compromise is the worst of politics, not the best.
5. The ‘deal’ preserves obstructionist Senate politics, and nothing more. It merely delays the showdown that must come as Democrats move more sharply left, and Republicans attempt to undo the judicial and cultural and economic blunders of the past. Unfortunately in the name of ‘bipartisanship,’ the generals have already sacrificed two of our best soldiers before we even enjoin the fight.
Senator Allen, I know you have been an aggressive and tireless fighter on this front. It is with leadership like yours that many of us remain encouraged. Make us proud. We have much to do, and many of us support the ideas upon which this administration was elected.
Please don’t allow this Congress to forget why we elected them with so much emotion. Compromise with a party moving left, moves the center.

Yea, funny, isn't it, that these guys go to Washington with a little bit of money, just regular folks, then ZOWIE -- they end up millionaires (or billionaires) in just six years of being a senator!

The best way to make the 7 republican sell-outs irrelevant is to make the GOP majority bigger so they are no longer "swing votes."
Easier said than done, but a worthy goal nonetheless.

I respectfully disagree. This compromise moves the bar for what might be considered "extraordinary cases" to nominees which are somewhere to the right of David Duke.
Just read the compilation of trash talk comments Dems spouted about Owen and Brown. After all the vitriol directed at those two upstanding, highly competent ladies and they are going to allow them to have a vote? This is a concession that they are not "extraordinary cases".
This is a huge victory becauase two ladies whom conservatives would LOVE to have on the SCOTUS are now inoculated when and if they are nominated for it.

No, I don't think they will dishonestl, because the 14 moderates (7 from each party) have effectively put the Dem leadership on notice that they won't go along with the sham. Else why even go through the motions of cutting this so-called "deal". There are obviously a handful of Democrats and a handful of Republicans that aren't in lock step with their leadership. The key is to get enough of them on the our side to total 60 votes. This deal may have given them the cover they needed to do the right thing.
Millionaire/Billionaire RATs, ala Fat Ted Kennedy -- so much for the common man. They feel our pain/know just how we feel -- yea, right -- and I just saw a pig fly by my window!!
