Dr. James Dobson Blasts Filibuster 'Betrayal'
U.S. Newswire ^ | 5/23/05 | Dr. James Dobson

Posted on 05/23/2005 8:34:29 PM PDT by Crackingham

"This Senate agreement represents a complete bailout and betrayal by a cabal of Republicans and a great victory for united Democrats. Only three of President Bush’s nominees will be given the courtesy of an up-or-down vote, and it's business as usual for all the rest. The rules that blocked conservative nominees remain in effect, and nothing of significance has changed. Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Antonin Scalia, and Chief Justice William Rehnquist would never have served on the U. S. Supreme Court if this agreement had been in place during their confirmations. The unconstitutional filibuster survives in the arsenal of Senate liberals.

"We are grateful to Majority Leader Frist for courageously fighting to defend the vital principle of basic fairness. That principle has now gone down to defeat. We share the disappointment, outrage and sense of abandonment felt by millions of conservative Americans who helped put Republicans in power last November. I am certain that these voters will remember both Democrats and Republicans who betrayed their trust."

The one thing I cannot figure out is why Pryor was one of the three protected nominees?

Maybe it has to do with Pryor already having served due to the recess appointment.

conservatives are being kept out of the judiciary

Brown, Owens, and Pryor are apparently headed to the bench, so that conservatives are being kept out isn't entirely true. The way I view this is that it's a tactical retreat by the Dems, who will regroup and fight again another day. The question will then be, what will the Quislings in the GOP do? I hope they will feel the sharp pain of the knife in their collective back.

Nothing against doctors, but most of them don't make very good politicians.

the only way frist can show himself as a leader in this situation is to ignore the compromise. otherwise he is in on it.

Can't blame it on McCain. He's just one Senator.

You wanna make a bet

McCain can kiss any chance of ever being the Republican Candidate in 08

As for the rest of the gang of 7 .. a few of them may find re-election difficult

The one thing I cannot figure out is why Pryor was one of the three protected nominees?

It's very simple. Carl Levin wanted Saad out of the way because he wants the job to go to his cousin's wife, and also Saad on that Circuit Court would have tilted its current tie to the right. Similarly, Myers was headed for a court where he would have tilted the balance. The RATs cannot allow that. Pryor will go where he will make little or no difference on a majorty RAT court...so they don't care. All that matters is the SCORE. It's not enough to get these people on. It's WHERE they go that is so critical...to tilt the balance in our favor. Clinton had SO many judges that it is an uphill battle.

That is why BUSH CANNOT PERMIT THIS TO STAND. If need be, he must choose July 4th as the line on the sand. Bush must tell the Senate: "You will allow an up or down vote on EVERY nominee by July 4th, or on that Independence Day, I shall recess appoint whomever is fillibustered, and take my fight to the people, and against the obstructionists, in the midterm elections"

It's a useless threat.

The only chance we have to get the filibuster against male nominees ended is putting these RINOs on record against changing it while the face of the nominee is female. White guys don't stand a chance against the character assassination the Rats will spew out. Hell, we barely got Clarence Thomas through.

If Frist doesn't force the issue as I detailed in a Vanity on the topic, it'll be dead and there's no way they'll pull it out for the SCOTUS unless the appointee is also female. And I'm sick of watching highly qualified nominees step aside because they're white and male. Do you approve of this harassment? Because until the filibuster is ended, it will successfully continue.

Agreed.

Corrected. And Graham's actually from SC. I'm embarrassed that my state column got FUBARed since the last time RINOs reared their fugly heads a few months ago.

I really don't see how we could force the rats to filibuster so we can get rid of it. Its no surprise that in the face of defeat they would retreat in hopes of using it again.

I agree. This cabal was and is out of control. They are not team players. Let's say there's a family with five kids. Four of the kids grow up well, respect their parents, support one another, and are productive members of society. One child is a slacker who shows no interest in getting an education or a job, is disrepectful of his parents, and rejects their values. Who is to blame? I don't think there's a parent alive who doesn't recognize that every once in awhile a "bad seed" takes root, and while one may quibble about past parental actions toward the obstreperous child, that child is ultimately responsible for his own rebellion. That's what McCain and Co. are -- bad seeds. I place the blame on them more than Frist.
