PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

[Page: S5714] GPO's PDF

---

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.

Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.

On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.

O.T. but Rush has an, uh, interesting caller online.

Roberts and Bennett captivated me to the point of muting Rush. What did the caller say?

He acted like he was a Washington insider. Claims to know where all the skeletons are buried. Basically he said the Democrats will use the tactic of not showing up in committee so that no judicial nominees could be voted OUT of the committee. In effective, they will find a way to shut down the government.
Rush to caller: "But they already said they WOULDN'T "shut down the government."

I do not want to sound optimistic. I do not! But...........it surely seemed to me as if the democrats are reduced to begging, cajoling, on their knees to republican renegade senators who might be persuaded to vote against Frist on this.

Unlike the republicans who are strong, sure, and continuing their arguments. Republicans are not resorting to insults, whines, or distortion of fact. They are making me proud.

On Chris Matthews Sunday Show, he predicted Frist would win this. I've often noted how wrong Matthews is when he does instant analysis, and I mean, he's way wrong in judging how a speech has gone, or how voters will poll on a live event he's covering. But on this subject, Matthews has had plenty of time to talk to the players. Maybe he has gotten this one right.

""In Tuesday's vote, the key will be how many Democrats decide to join the 55 Republican senators in voting for the cloture motion. Under the current rules of the Senate, it takes 60 senators to vote to end debate."

How come I didn't see this in the NY Times?
