When the Chief Justice is on the winning side he appoints a justice to write the opinion. If he's on the losing side Justice Stevens appoints someone to write the opinion. There have been cases where the CJ seemed to me to be voting for the wrong side, but I think he does this by design occasionally to control who writes the opinion.

"I would concede the former but the latter did not have American Idol and ESPN so I contend they actually did care about the outcome."

I remembered that stastistic from one of my history classes, that the country was divided 1/3 in favor, 1/3 opposed, and 1/3 neutral. I guess the third group was content to stare at the flames in their fireplaces, which was probably every bit as entertaining as American Idol. (Don't tell my wife I said that, she's a big fan.) <;)

Rush just said McPain will never get the Repub nomination in 08 if he votes with the demonRATs on this!

Olds Media's lack of clout and credibility may stun some RINOs in 06.

Specter is about a 55% Republican, but considering that Pennsylvania voted (barely) for Kerry and we have him and Santorum, that's not too bad. Same for Maine and Rhode Island.

If we can just replace some of the 'Rat Senators in states that voted for GWB, then we should have over 60 Senators, of whom maybe 6-8 are dicey. Then we aren't so dependent on cutting deals. After all, if GWB carried 30 and 31 states in his two election, we really should get 60 Senators. ND is a state that we should target.

McCain won't listen to anyone, he's too arrogant to realize the contempt he is held in by the base. He seems to be of the belief that the opinion of the MSM, a few fawning politicians and whatever is in the water of Arizona makes him a lock.

Considering McCain was the Democrats first choice as a presidential candidate, and barring that their first choice as a Vice presidential nominee, and considering the MSM considered him their primary favorite, well, three strikes and you're out. The poeple that adore him are the people we despise.

Thompson and Feinstein have both called for more time to consider the issue so they know they've lost and are just trying to buy time...imho.

Who knows what Warner will do here, but I know from personal experience that he's a true friend of the american military family, and for that he'll always have my respect.

Plus he was married to Liz Taylor when she was still fairly hot.

"people should understand what's at stake .. will understand there is no judicial crisis ..all Bush has to do is have nominees that are acceptable to this body .. blah blah .. goal was for both parties to work together (COMITY) ... blah blah blah ahhh"

The Democrats have not needed rules changes in the past because they have dominated the Senate and the House. Over the past century, the Dems controlled the senate most of the time. In fact, the Dems contolled the Senate from 1954 until 1978 without interruption with majorities of up to 30 Senators. They again regained control from 1986-92 and for 18 months in 2000-1 with the Jeffords switch. Is it any wonder that they still think they are in power or at least, think it is their birthright?

The GOP has been the minority party in Congress for most of the 20th Century. The Dems held the House for 40 years straight. During the period 1932 to 1992, the GOP held the majority in the House for just two sessions or four years out of 60.

1936, the Dems had an over 200 member majority over the GOP in the House and over 50 in the Senate. I wonder if the MSM were talking about minority rights then.

In the 20-year period 1958 to 1978, the Dems held the majority in the Senate. During the 11 Congresses, the Dems had majorities of at least 20 Senators 7 out of the 11 times and over 30 twice. For those in Rio Linda, that means there were at least 60 Dems during those years and at least 70 for two of those years.

Until this past decade, the US has essentially been run by one party for over 60 years. The GOP must stop acting like the minority party or it will be again.

He's not getting it anyway. I think Reid has McCain and Warner in the bag. I hand-delivered a letter to Warner & got a very ambiguous letter in the mail a few weeks later. I think we'll hold DeWine since he's up in '06. Collins & Snowe may think they can trade their votes for some help with the BRAC. I don't have a speculation on Hagel.

Hasn't GM ended the Olds?

Seriesly, though, Old Media is dead -- just ask al-Newsweek.
