PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

[Page: S5714] GPO's PDF

---

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.

Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.

On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.

Although it is best for us if we win the "nucular" vote by more than one vote, you just know Cheney is praying for a 50-50 tie so he can cast the decisive vote while he looks right at Leahy.

And just how SWEET would it be to see the MSM and the 'Rats whine about how Dick Cheney forced George W. Bush's nominees through the Senate! The lamentations of their women will be just music to our ears!!

Is it a vote on the nomineee or a vote on the rule?

Neither, don-o. It's a live quorum call.

Can someone explain the "quorum" calls and their significance?

It's a non-event.

quorum call - A call of the roll to establish whether a quorum is present. If any Senator "suggests the absence of a quorum," the Presiding Officer must direct the roll to be called. Often, a quorum call is terminated by unanimous consent before completion, which permits the Senate to use the quorum call to obtain a brief delay to work out some difficulty or await a Senator's arrival.

Cots are pictured set up in the Strom Thurmond room in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, May 23, 2005. Cots were brought into the Capitol Monday as Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tn) scheduled an all-night session stretching into Tuesday to dramatize the debate over President Bush's judicial nominees and the filibusters that Democrats have used to block votes on 10 of them. As the U.S. Senate battle over judges and procedural rules intensifies, almost everything under the Capitol dome, from presidential nominees to major legislation, is in danger of getting caught in the cross-fire.

I still LOL when I think of the comment about Hatch during the impeachment - "Dont count your Hatch before he chickens". He is a RINO indeed!

I am beginning to wonder what it takes to be considered a RINO. Hatch has a lifetime rating of 90 from the ACU and a 96 for 2004. In contrast, Bob Bennett has a lifetime rating of 86 and 88 for 2004.

Hatch has a 100 percent rating from National Right to Life, 100% from the US Chamber of Commerce, 100% Christian Coalition; 100% from the Family Research Council; and 0% from the ACLU.

How do you conclude that Hatch is a RINO?

WTH kind of look IS that?! Is she threatening someone or just trying to make someone pee his pants with fear? She needs a lamp or ashtray flailed in her general direction.

Thank you. But this one seems not to be a nonevent. Maybe it is being used to compel attendence by the Dems.

Appreciate the answer though.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Senator Hatch who recommended Ruth Ginsberg to clinton? That makes him a bi-RINO at the very least.
