Manchester Union Leader ^ | 5/21/2005 | RILEY YATES and JODY RECORD

A Manchester man who went to retrieve his two daughters from a party at a University of New Hampshire fraternity was arrested early yesterday morning after he pulled a handgun and told revelers to "back off."

Sounds like the guy watches too much of "The O.C."

The story does not indicate that they were held against their will. Just sounds like they didn't have a ride home. I respect women plenty, but that doesn't mean I have to give every drunk girl who asks a 40 minute ride home.

" Who cares what UNH has to say on the matter?"

Students and employees care. They can be expelled/fired.

Okay. Before this gets out of hand. You posted: They were 17. Past the age of consent in Texas. Actually, it's damned good thing this happened in NH, because I don't think Dad would have made it off campus in TX.

I took this to mean that if this had happened in TX that the frat boys would be in their rights to keep the girls at the party. And, that if this were in TX dad would have gotten his butt kicked if he had tried this because, since the girls were past the age of consent dad had no right to take them from the party (even though they called him to come pick them up). Further, you implied that the TX boys are so tough that they would have taken care of dad regardless of his will or the girl's will.

Do I have that right or did I misunderstand?

It doesn't say who brought them to the party. It could have been a classmate- another 17 year old girl. Believe it or not, high school girls have been known to actually get together in one car and drive to a frat party. I doubt your average college fraternity member would be willing to stop in the middle of a party and drive someone he doesn't know 35 miles to their daddy. Besides, if these frat guys were drinking, it would have been incredibly irresponsible for any of these college boys to drive these girls anywhere. So the frat guys actually showed some responsibility by not driving a car.

GO DAD GO.

I think this is one of those deals that could spark a real outcry if they insist on pressing these idiotic charges on him.

You may have it exactly right, but we don't know yet. It could be that the dad burst in and started waving a gun immediately. I don't think all the facts are in yet.

Knowing that particular fraternity, I suspect the brothers were well primed and quite intimidating, but I wasn't there. Since graduation was today and all of the students went home, I probably won't hear the real scoop before next September.

There will undoubtedly be some alcohol related charges filed in the near future.

Bill Clinton, is that you? :)

Wow! Talk about spin. Maybe they could have gotten someone who wasn't drunk to take them home. Or, maybe they could have just let them leave instead of surrounding dad when he came to get them. Nah. Too much to ask of college boys.

Thank you. Shooting at lunch has become more difficult since we aren't allowed to bring firearms on campus, even locked in our cars.

Not past the drinking age in Texas, though. And I dare say if this happened in Texas, the driver would have brought the girls home when asked.

As to your comment about Dad not getting off the campus; that's some mighty wishful thinking.

In MY part of the Great State of Texas, we raise our men with better manners. Don't know what part you are from or the kind of folks your visiting with, but if that is their response to a concerned father looking for his girls, you're with the WRONG CROWD.

Speaking of frats... I had a fake frat sweat shirt made up (purple shirt with red paisley letters - quite ugly I recall) - I always wore it when proctoring exams... the "Greek" leters were "G," "E," and "K" (get it?).

Talk about shaking things up... the frat rats (they always wore those goofy shirts touting some drunk fest they attended) and bow heads/SBs were always baffled and didn't have a clue what "frat" I represented.

Little did they know it was a slam on all that was the "Greek" system.

I'll bet the girls are in serious trouble with dad. Can you say, "grounded forever?"

Don't you think "forever" is a bit extreme?
How about until age 36?

Gram. I know the impulse is hard to resist, but the best way to deal with juveniles posting nonsense is to ignore them.

Responding in any way suggests that they actually have two brain cells to rub together.

Let's see. You're a bunch of frat guys having a typical party and some lunatic crashes through the front door demanding to know who is throwing an underage drinking party. I'm sure the universal response would be to direct the disturbed fellow to the fraternity president who would debate him regarding the pros and cons of underage drinking. After realizing the error of his ways, the president would immediately halt the party, chastising his brothers for their boorish behavior. He would then have several brothers escort the father and his two daughters 35 miles to their home in Manchester. Once there, the frat brothers would drape their coats over any puddles so the girls could get into the house without getting their feet wet and then serenade the young ladies with a rousing chorus of "A Bicycle Built for Two"

Well, isn't that special. Apparently you think the laws passed by POLITICIANS supercede the laws laid down by PARENTS. IN MY HOUSE, you are minor until you are 18, NO MATTER WHAT politicans (in Texas, or anywhere else for that matter) say the law is.
