Re: "he should stick to producing/playing with special effects"

THX 1138 and Star Wars...heh, end of story. I like the technique of the the radio usage between the Storm Troopers and the fighter pilots. That grainy transmission, the same effect used by the metal faced cops in THX. I like the all the robots in the scene of Star Wars when R2D2 and C3PO get abducted by those nomads.

The interesting and for me exciting special effects in Star Wars is computer based imagery. In these last three made episodes its almost impossible to tell graphics from reality. Unless of course you have a trained eye. Yes there are some very cheesy effects, but these were meant to be that way. In effect, Star Wars is the type of movie a 15 year old adolescent would make if they had millions to spend. Very adolescent story line but the computer effects are about the only thing that interests me. Very cutting edge work there.

Back in the very early days of computer special effects, there was a direct link between Silicon Valley Computer Manufacturers and Hollywood Special Effects Studios. The two were probably not looked at as seperate entities. Lucas probably moved north to get closer to the desk sized graphics supercomputers that were being made in the Silicon Valley.
