from the promos, it look like they're doing a CG version of a book published in the 80s, hypothetical (ie: sci-fi) exobiology in the form of a survey report of an alien ecosystem.
the book was not without merit, as fruits of a fairly rigorous mental exercise.

I have the book, its called
Expedition , by sci-fi fantasy artist Wayne Barlowe. Excellent stuff; the aliens are truly alien, not people and animals in rubber masks.
