You can't suit yourself in the NFL

PHILADELPHIA - (KRT) - Much to my wife's chagrin, and as those of you who routinely see me on cable television can attest, my sense of fashion will never garner me any awards from GQ magazine.

While I have been known to occasionally upgrade my wardrobe - yes, I do own a couple of suits and some ties - I'm generally a walking fashion mistake. No designer suits, no fur coats.

I'm just a khakis, shirt or sweater kind of guy.

So far be it from me to champion the cause of the jacket and tie.

Still, I find it comical that in an era when all professional sports have a problem with image, the National Football League would crack down on a guy who simply wanted to smack down a little old-school dignity and class to its sidelines.

Not too long ago, rookie San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan petitioned the league to be able to wear a jacket and tie on the sidelines during a game.

It seems Nolan wanted to honor his father, Dick Nolan, by dressing the way he did when he coached the Niners from 1968 to 1975.

But when the league looked at Nolan's request, it was declined.

You see, back in 2002, the NFL signed a 10-year deal with Reebok to be the exclusive clothing supplier for the league. That means everything NFL coaches and players wear during games must be manufactured by the sports apparel company.

At this particular moment, Reebok does not manufacture dress jackets or ties.

"And if we don't make it," Reebok spokesman Eddie White told the Associated Press on Tuesday, "(Nolan) can't wear it."

Because of its crackdown on celebrations and any display of personal enjoyment, the NFL earned the moniker "No Fun League."

Aw jeez...I just can't picture Lombardi or Hallas wearing a dang warm-up suit to the game. What a joke.

Yeah, Landry was an awesome man. I wonder what he and Lombardi do for fun in the New Jerusalem these days...

Lombardi, Hallas, Nolan, Shula, etc... weren't paid the millions that todays coaches get. Part of the spoils are supplemented by sponsors and I think the coaches should honor those contracts.

Reebok has indicated that they would be willing to work with the coaches to design a formal attire to their liking. I'm sure that they must sense a potential market opportunity or I could be wrong and they are simply trying to be accommodating.

Probably have the same battles as they did when they were assistants for the Giants.

This is incredibly dumb. You would think that coaches would be required to wear coats and ties.

One amusing thing about European soccer is watching the coaches on the sideline, dressed to the 9's and having a smoke . . . .

"Yeah, Landry was an awesome man. I wonder what he and Lombardi do for fun in the New Jerusalem these days..."

My theory is they sub for St. Peter at the gates and let in the class acts of high school, pro and college football, asking them to join the heavenly squad, while joyfully springing the trapdoor on the rest, sending them to an eternity of hairdressing.

Especially in light of the humiliating attire that the managers in the big leagues endure:
