Woman Won't Come Out Of House, Even When Family Arrives

POSTED: 12:57 pm CDT May 10, 2005 UPDATED: 5:17 pm CDT May 10, 2005

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Minden, Iowa, woman who disappeared Saturday apparently lied about her pregnancy because she was unhappy, according to a news release from the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office.

Stephanie Ehlers was believed to be pregnant when she disappeared Saturday. She was found in Omaha Tuesday, and reports say she is doing fine, though she is not pregnant as her husband had thought.

Ehlers was last seen by her husband, Jason, on Saturday. Jason Ehlers said he went to a party that night, and when he came home early Sunday, his wife and her car -- a 1989 red Chevrolet Cavalier -- were gone.

The car was found in Omaha near 36th and Polk streets and Ehlers was in a home nearby. Stephanie Ehlers' brother said a letter carrier, who's a friend of the family, spotted his sister's car, recognized it and called police.

Officers knocked on doors in the neighborhood and found Stephanie Ehlers inside a home on the corner of 36th and Polk streets. Police said they were interviewing the woman. Video

Pottawatamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said his deputies spoke with Ehlers Monday afternoon at the Omaha home where she was found.

"The deputies confirmed Ms. Ehlers was OK and had left her Minden home under her own free will," Danker's news release stated. "Ms. Ehlers also advised that she found out in September that she was pregnant but miscarried approximately three weeks later. She advised that she continued to lie about being pregnant due to her unhappy home life. She advised that when the opportunity presented itself on (Saturday), she left home and went to Omaha. She advised that her long goal plan was to conceal her identity and start over in Texas."

Stephanie Ehlers refused to come out of the house, even when family arrived. Despite that, her family said they're simply relieved she's all right.

"No matter how bad it is, or what's going on, it can all be fixed with a little prayer and lots of love from the family," said the woman's father, Frank Schrotberger.

Same thing with men who leave their families, immaturity and selfishness.

"And where was the husband all saturday night?"

A story in the Omaha World Herald said that the husband was at a NASCAR party without the wife and found her missing when he got home...Can't imagine why she would not be happy with a man like that.

An unhappy, unstable woman misses the excitement, the attention and the hope that goes with being pregnant.

Such is the misery of people who base their happiness on earthly, and not Godly, standards.

Sept was 8 months ago, she had to have done something to make it look like she was pg. How does someone fool a husband?

Because the cars wouldn't run underwater.

As for black drivers, don't discount Bill Lester:

Maybe the husband is easily fooled. Obviously not a normal relationship or she wouldn't have done this. Women pretending to be pregnant is not unheard of--sometimes they go as far as stealing an infant at the correct time.

It seems like there's a lot of this going on. People have the right to come and go as they please, but it's a selfish thing when they don't tell their loved ones. Of course, when it's their loved ones who they are trying to get away from, then there's nothing anyone can do.

Oh, spare me. Like husbands and wives don't attend social events with their friends sans one another. What does where he was have to do with anything? The chick's a whack job. Period.

Maybe she didn't want to go to the party. She was too busy planning on pulling her vanishing stunt.

I apologize for being a tad cynical, I'm sure when the smoke clears there'll be enough dirty laundry to festoon Central Park.

I love that analogy! Or is it a metaphor? I should have been an English major!

She should have taken this woman's advice:

" A Woman's Poem "

He didn't like the casserole
And he didn't like my cake.
My biscuits were too hard..
Not like his mother used to make.

I didn't perk the coffee right
He didn't like the stew,
I didn't mend his socks
The way his mother use! d to do.

I pondered for an answer
I was looking for a clue.
Then I turned around and smacked him...
Like his Mother used to do.

Unfortunately it turns out to be a mixed metaphor. The 'smoke clears' clashes with the 'dirty laundry'. Further on re-reading it, I regretted not having used 'linens' in place of 'laundry'. More elegant if that is possible considering the subject matter.

The fact that he was out all night struck me as noteworthy. Maybe that's typical for him.
