It'd take a HUGE post to talk about the details of the "third trilogy". However, the events of the third trilogy have already been produced, albeit in graphic novel form. These graphic novels have been done with Lucas' blessing, and shows what happens immediately after the fall of the Empire. An extremely abridged version follows:
- Luke teaches Leia the ways of the Force. She's not as good as Luke, but can now hold her own with a lightsaber.
- Surprise! Palpatine has clones, but they are inferior, and age very rapidly. He has learned to transfer his conciousness into a clone after the useful life of one clone gives out or is killed.
-Palpatine and assorted other officers still loyal to the Empire do their best to try to destroy the fledgling New Republic.
-Han and Leia get married and have three kids; twins Jaina and Jacen, and little brother Anakin.
- Leia decides not to become a Jedi, but to do her part by helping to govern the New Republic. She eventually takes over as galatic President when Mon Mothma passes away.
-In the end, the Emperor has run out of viable clones after an attack on his cloning lab. He attacks the hideaway where Leia and the children are. He attempts to take over little Anakin as his last clone dies, but his 'essence' is 'intercepted' by a long-lost and disfigured Jedi come to defend Leia and the children along with Luke and Han. He then dies, fading into the Force, trapping the Emperor's essence within the Force for eternity, never to be a threat again.
It's a great story, but it will NEVER be made. The only way they could is to use CGI to remake the faces of the original cast (Ford, Fisher, and Hamill) on three "body doubles" (which people are trying to experiment with right now) OR to cast three new actors in the roles. You see, the events in this story take place RIGHT AFTER Episode VI...and the three actors in the starring roles are now WAY TOO OLD to play themselves at the age they were at the end of Ep. VI.
If Lucas used new actors to play roles made legendary by others, it'd just never work.
Lucas has always put elements in the movies to appeal to a wide range of ages. I see no such major difference in the tone, other than it was a different time with Empire v. Republic.
Anyway, what changes were made to the original trilogy that you believe so dramatically changed the tone of them?
Its a plot device. See Ep. III.
What a putz.
I wasn't talking about the plot in any way whatsoever, and I don't know how many different ways I can say that to you. Good grief.
I was and is why he may seem like he is aged. Although aged isn't accurate either.
slapstick visual humor when solo steps on jabba's tail in episode IV.
visual humor of the CGI added to the arrival to mos eisley with the landspeeder causing an animal to lift up with consequences for its passenger.
both of these are detailed here

He also claimed at one time, that he was done after Episode VI, and that there would be no Episodes 1-3.
Ah- most people, perhaps- but not all.
I was an adult when ANH came out- intentionally avoided it because I LOATHED Star Trek( still do). Thought SW was more mini-skirts and bouffant hairdos in space with horny space captains.
I saw ROTJ first, and the others more than a year apart. Exactly backward.
The magic IS gone with this new trilogy. It's not about 'childhood memories' for me. Lucas had one attitude back then- when he didn't have total control and had to compromise. His films quality declined in direct proportion to his gaining total creative and financial power. The more pure George, the stupider they got.
I have a soft spot for ROTJ, because I saw it first, but ESB is the far better film.
These last three( and please God, let the humiliation end there), are more George- and George is more PC and corporation driven now.
Nothing gets on screen until it gets past the merchandising committees for marketability. It's sad to see it come to this- but then, long time fans like me have long since imagined our own 'history' for the OT. And I like mine better!
That's funny, I heard George was laughing his a$$ off at Shindler's list.
Well, he obviously had some intention of doing so since he named the "first" movie Episode 4.
Well, a few two-second or less insertions don't dramatically change the character of the film. In order to put that scene with Jabba into the film, there was no choice but to have the stepping on the tail (unless the scene just remained on the cutting room floor).
And I don't see how the whole first section of the movie, which is mostly R2-D2 and C-3P0 and then them and the jawas is "adult" in nature...that's rather kiddish. Jar Jar was pretty much a replacement for them in Ep. I because their roles were not as great in that film...Jar Jar's role was reduced in Ep. II and R2-D2 and C-3P0 refilled the void.
With Ep. III being rated PG-13, that's pretty much proof the series is not designed to be geared just toward children.
Right - Lucas said Fox didn't want that in the first film because it would be "confusing" - although after its success he added it to the video releases, and I think the next movies did have Ep. V and VI respectively after that in the theatrical releases.
"With Ep. III being rated PG-13, that's pretty much proof the series is not designed to be geared just toward children."
Or it is proof that Lucas is capable of a limited amount of critical self-inspection, or proof that he actually has a plan for this movie besides making videogame knockoffs and toys. After Ep. I, with the small kid actor, the fart humor, jar jar, etc., I don't see any doubt his market for that film was children. I vividly recall a friend of mine saying when he saw the pod race sequence that there would be a pod racing videogame released given the prominence it had in the film, and in fact there already was one though we didn't know it. Also it is notable that ep IV managed to be successful without having a big monster fart and a kid and jar jar make grossed-out noises.
Why won't the guy just officially release the original films for those of us who won't respect his 'right to control how his artistic work is displayed or seen.'
I dusted off my VHS of Star Wars and watched it the other day. Judging from these new movies, I think Lucas has surrounded himself by yes men.
$50,013,859 in one day...so much for unsuccessful huh?
