I’ve written that, before any couple starts to plan a honeymoon vacation to Europe, they should visit Quebec.
That goes for a lot of other would-be world travellers, too.
In Quebec, we have what amounts to a foreign country—a slab of continental Europe—right on our doorstep.
Quebec City is the most historic and beautiful capital in our country, the Gaspe is marvelous, and the Laurentians magnificent.
Yet, since the currency is the same no one will gyp you, drinking the tap water won’t make you sick, and if they can, and many can’t, Quebecers will speak to you in your own language.
I’ve spent a lot of happy times in Quebec, especially in old Montreal, and it’s all rather enchanting.
Setting the scene for this column in this way will, I hope, prevent anyone from labelling me anti-French Canadian or anti-Quebec.
After all, the Jean Chretien/Paul Martin Liberals are ever eager to hurl slurs at people. Particularly so when it comes to Quebec, which is a charade, since those of us with an ounce of common sense now know the sudden surge of separatist fever in la belle province has been spurred by the Chretien/Martin clique itself, and by the shameless looting of the taxpayers’ money as evidence by revelations coming out of Mr. Justice John Gomery’s inquiry.

Could'nt agree more. My mother is from Murray Bay (La Malbaie) and I spent every summer of my childhood there. Would recommend a vacation to Quebec and upper Quebec without reservation.
Proviso: do some research on their current attitudes towards Americans. Even with my half Quebec blood, I would not recommend spending a tourist penny there if I am welcome as a US Citizen.
They aren't stupid up there -- they realize that a Federal government in Washington D.C. would be worse than a Federal government in Ottawa.
Socialism is slavery by government and it could be said Canadians are slaves by their own choosing.. Wonder if their is a Canadian in the whole country that would actually turn down a government check... Probably not.. Parasitism is an infectious social disease..
We like Alberta's oil and conservative spirit, but we might be far better off with it as an independent but friendly ally.
Quebec could join St. Pierre and Miquelon as French overseas possessions. After all, they apparently want to rewind back to the 18th century and be a French colony anyway.

The Old City of Quebec is very nice. There's even a marker on one of the main streets in honor of the American Richard Montgomery, killed in the attack on Dec. 31, 1775 (namesake of a number of Montgomery Counties in the US). I didn't have any unpleasant encounters with the locals when I visited, but maybe I was just lucky.
Why would Quebec leave Canada when it can milk the Canadian taxpayers for all they are worth?
I visited Quebec city once for a weekend conference. It is, indeed, like a little piece of Europe, but to my eye at least without any of the charm of a real French city or town. Two days were enough to see the whole thing and be ready to leave.
No doubt about it. Quebec's not going anywhere.

Well technically, the US should have declared war on France when they put an emperor on the throne of Mexico in the 19th century - that was a much bigger violation of the Monroe Doctrine.

I live near the border with PQ and have been there a few times. No real problems.
However it seems that every person I know from the US who has visited in the last few years has either had things stolen from them or almost stolen.
One pair of fellows who went up on a fishing trip stopped for a meal at a restaurant and came out to find their pickup camper shell broken into and emptied of a few thousand bucks worth of gear.
Another few friends were up snowmobiling and stoppped at a bar/restaurant. They were alerted by the owner to check on their snow machines as some guys were in the process of loading them on trailers. He had already called the cops.
When I go up, I pull into a chain link fence and barbed wire surrounded compound, and the gate is locked behind us.
It has gotten really bad since the gun laws came into effect up there and the crooks know you're unarmed.
I never leave my vehicle from my sight.
We used to go up quite often, but very seldom now.
On the other hand, the laws since 9-11 have also made it very hard for some folks I know in Quebec to conduct business in the USA.
One, who is in his 60s now and has been crossing the border to buy and sell (mostly buy) from American companies for over 30 years can no longer enter the US.
He had gotten into a fight when he was a teenager while visiting the US. Since that is on his record he is now barred form entering... All because of the Patriot act.
The fact that he is now a mature adult and has uneventfully conducted business and travelled all over the USA doesn't count.
It's a bad situation all around and I don't see any sign of a chance for any improvement.
This post makes me laugh. Do you really think the U.S. would want anything to to with a seperate Quebec? Please. Quebec has the highest unionization percentage and is by far the most left leaning province in Canada, and that's saying something. Plus, ff you don't know french, Quebecers want nothing to do with you, with the exception of Montrealers.
There's no way Quebec will seperate, and if they do it will be to their own peril.

This is not the first time this issue has been contemplated and canadians experts did a meeting in the late 1990's and came to the conclusion that canada merging into the USA was inevitable. (1 to 2 hundred years max)
