ROME Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday he will resist attempts to "water down" Vatican teaching, indicating he will uphold Pope John Paul II's unwavering stands against abortion and euthanasia and will work to guarantee obedience to Church doctrine.
Benedict outlined his vision of his papacy in a homily during a ceremony in which he took his place on a marble-and-mosaic throne of in the ancient Roman basilica of St. John in Lateran. The ceremony is the last formally marking Benedict's assumption of the papacy.
The pope "must not proclaim his own ideas, but ever link himself and the Church to obedience to the word of God, when faced with all attempts of adaptation or of watering down, as with all opportunism," Benedict said.
"That's what Pope John Paul II did, when ... faced with erroneous interpretations of freedom, underlined in an unequivocal way, the inviolability of human beings, the inviolability of human life from conception to natural death," Benedict said.
"Freedom to kill is not a true freedom but a tyranny that reduces the human being into slavery," the pontiff said to ringing applause from the congregation.

Hope so! Maybe Paul VI's "boy bishops" just want to go off and have fun now.
Experts discover H20 is moist!
Would either you or Luther have anything to say about all these Protestants particularly the Lutherans?
My suggestion would be to cancel the subscription and ask "Mom" to send you a subscription to any one of the following:

Tomorrow is Mother's Day. Why not surprise 'Mom' with her own subscription to one and or all three of these orthodox catholic publications! What better gift than one that keeps on giving.
Any idea which articles resulted in the request for resignation?
Apparently, many! Several bishops have written the Vatican complaining about the anti-catechetical reporting in this magazine. Toss it out!
How about that? Make him a bishop and a cardinal at the same time!
I quit reading America a long, long time ago, so I'm not up on the specific articles. But I would suspect it was the overall effect of many left-wing, anti-Christian articles that finally got him out of there. That is, I think B16 has known for a long time who is with the program and who ain't. And we don't need the latter.
NYer made some really good magazine suggestions. First Things is great - long, well written articles from Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox writers - but if you want a faster read, go for the National Catholic Register, which is very orthodox but has shorter articles if you're pressed for time.
You forgot to mention the tough stance the Spanish bishops have taken in opposition to the homosexual "marriage" bill. They even went so far to say that mayors should perform civil disobedience.
I thank God every day for this Holy Man!
Good thing you're on a Catholic thread, FRiend.
You would be toast by now (I agree with you)
Could you please give me a website to find those quotes? Or a book?
I would love for my Presbyterian Hubby to see them. He started to attend Holy Mass with us and I think this would be a push on the right path.

Now you know why THIS Lutheran Pastor's Former Wife is now a Roman Catholic and believes in a celibate Priesthood!
Makes me wonder if my EX read this "real piece of work" by Luther before or after he committed his three adulterous affairs.
Watch out Fr. O'Brien and Fr. Martin! Just to mention a few.
>>If Abp. Levada goes to the CDF...he ought to be replaced by "Joseph Cardinal Fessio."<<
I like the way you think!

This Rock is an excellent apologetics magazine edited by Karl Keating of Catholic Answers. It features articles by a diverse group including James Akin. It is a monthly and always has a segment explaining in detail why the Church believes in some Article of Faith amply giving quotes from Scripture and the Church Fathers. I recommend it very highly.

Even better, imho, would be to make Fr Fessio head of the Jesuit Order!
Catholic World News on-line is fabulous. It can come as a digest to your email account with links to stories each day. It is very modest in price for a subscription too.
