Another 40 members have left in protest.
Waynesville, NC-- The minister of a Haywood County Baptist church is telling members of his congregation that if they're Democrats, they either need to find another place of worship or support President Bush.
Already, the Reverend Chan Chandler has ex-communicated nine members of East Waynesville Baptist Church. Another 40 members have left in protest.

This gesture has surely made a statement. Convert or get out. Lol.
There are empty pews in pretty much all of the Episcopal churches these days.
Why isn't this pastor backing God? After all, Bush is only human....
sign me up .. .. ..
I am sorry but that is just wrong. As much as I actually enjoy it, I think this minister has overstepped his boundaries. This is grounds for a review of tax-exempt status, no different that what we would call for when the inner-city baptist churches hold campaign rallies for dumocrats.
Baptists can't excommunicate. Not in their religion.
This is so illustrative of why I have a problem with "the religious right".
If this is all there is to the story- and this pastor booted out members of his congregation because they're not Bush supporters- shame on him- he's a disgrace.
Not representative.
"A former church treasurer says she's at church to worship God and not the preacher."
Kind of hard to argue with that. I have to agree with some other posters there something missing in this story.
I would leave too, if I belonged to this church. If I wanted to live in a theocracy, I would move to Iran or someplace similar...........
Weird.
Will he start refining his requirements to include specific issues also? He will be down to a pretty small congregation if he keeps this up.
"The minister of a Haywood County Baptist church is telling members of his congregation that if they're Democrats, they either need to find another place of worship or support President Bush."
And the minister's going to need one heckuva tax attorney when this gets back to the IRS.
You are wrong..... to be sorry. This is insane.
This is how the Taliban got their start. What's next Bhurkas?
"Journalists" could care less about the fine details. Not a part of their religion.
Yeah, it makes no sense the way it is being reported.
As much as I like seeing somebody actually excommunicating people, it should be over theology and heresy, not politics.
