Islamic leaders demand apology for 'hate-filled remarks'

Evangelist Pat Robertson is in trouble with U.S. Islamic organizations for saying Muslims should not serve in the president's Cabinet or as judges.

Pat Robertson

In an appearance on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" Sunday, Robertson, who ran for president in 1988, said if were elected he would not appoint Muslims to his Cabinet and that he was not in favor of Muslims serving as judges.

"They have said in the Quran there's a war against all the infidels," Robertson said. "Do you want somebody like that sitting as a judge? I wouldn't."

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations yesterday called on "mainstream political and religious leaders" to repudiate the "hate-filled remarks."

"This type of hate-filled rhetoric deserves repudiation from all who respect America's long-standing tradition of pluralism," said Rabiah Ahmed, CAIR's communication coordinator.

Ahmed said many Muslims already serve with distinction in many levels of government, including judgeships at the state and local level.

Arsalan Iftikhar, CAIR's national legal director, said Robertson "has taken his far-right-wing rhetoric to absurd levels."

"He is trying to perpetuate this notion that Islam is a monolithic entity inherently at odds with modernity and democracy," Iftikhar said. "That is absolutely false. ... American Muslims have long been contributing members of American society.

Iftikhar added: "And I guarantee to Mr. Robertson that Muslims will one day become part of the federal bench -- whether or not he likes it."

Muslims were particularly outraged by a 2002 appearance on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" program in which Robertson said about Islam's prophet, Muhammad: "This man was an absolute wild-eyed fanatic. He was a robber and a brigand. And to say that these terrorists distort Islam, they're carrying out Islam. ... I mean, this man (Muhammad) was a killer. And to think that this is a peaceful religion is fraudulent."

Robertson also called Islam "a monumental scam" and claimed the Quran "is strictly a theft of Jewish theology."

Muslims are "right" to put their "god" above their country. They just happen to follow the wrong "god".

Original Intent - "Religion" means denominations of Christianity

Really? Which emanation of which penumbra of Article VI or Amendment I did you pull that from?

Please tell me what is keeping the Muslims in this country from doing the exact same thing about their religion.

I've criticized externals of Catholicism, but I don't deny and won't criticize the basic beliefs of my Church.

I don't expect Muslims to trash their religion or their beliefs. Why would they, if they believe it?

And, yes, Muslims in America want to be just like every other religion. According to the Constitution, they ARE like every other religion.

I'm grateful to attend college now in my early 30's after I became a Christian and a conservative as well as an opinionated stubborn mule. Many younger students are afraid to speak out to their leftist professors and some have quietly thanked me for doing so.

Why wouldn't they criticize the people who are commiting these acts in the NAME of Islam?

Are you saying you wouldn't do that if it was people acting in the name of the Catholic Church?

What are they doing (the muslims) in our Christian country, anyway?

It's not "your" country, cowboy. American Muslims are American citizens. They have just as much of a right to breathe American air as you do.

For that matter, so do Jews, which you don't seem to want in your "Christian" country either.

That is patently false.

I understand that, I have had quite a few verbal spats with leftist professors. I got the honorable distinction of basically being called a sexist bigot the other week for sticking up for Larry Summers when my professor was calling him stupid.

i simply point out just because you are in college you still have a LOT to learn about life.At 16 you may have thought your self wise but at 21 i trust you look back at it as folly. at 35 youll have a whole different take on life and the world. Open your eyes and look at the carnage being waged around the world by islam, from africa to europe, russia, to the phillipines, jacarta to yes even asia, a true look and you will have to see islam is a murderous entity at best. I hope it never reigns its death upon you or your family, but it sure as hell will if it isnt crushed.

He is young and at least conservative. I must say on some level may of us at his age would respond as he has. What he doesn't understand is that those of us who have years of experience in this world see it differently and with maybe more pessimism. He is a bit naive and most likely doesn't understand that in the coming decades there will most likely be a final, ultra violent titanic battle between Islam and the rest of the worlds religions. It can only be avoided if the violent aspects of Islam are repudiated by it's followers (low probability). Most likely, some very terrible events will occur that will cause countries to take the "survival" steps of utterly destroying all enclaves of fanatic Muslim followers.

How do you know they don't? Maybe they do it to their neighbors or in their own mosques.

But I don't understand demanding that innocent people who had nothing to do with any atrocities stand up and beat their breasts, apologizing for people who did commit atrocities, just because they share the same religion.

Are you saying you wouldn't do that if it was people acting in the name of the Catholic Church?

Tim McVeigh was supposedly a Catholic, but I never stood in the town square and condemned Tim McVeigh because I share the same religion with him.

It's quite simple: that's the only thing that has even the slightest chance of stopping it.

"Original Intent - "Religion" means denominations of Christianity"

Umm...no it doesn't, religion means religion if they wanted do say Christianity, they would have said Christianity.

You obviously know nothing about the vernacular of the day.  Ministers and theologians of the time always used the terms "Religion" and "Christian" synonymously.  Try reading Wesley, Whitefield, Edwards or any theologian of those times.  Even as far as the mid-1800's and past (Charles Finney's writings for example).  This was so commonplace as not to be debatable. This was not the great multicultural paradise that you enjoy at Purdue. ;-)

James 1:26-27

26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
(from New International Version)

I thank you for not at least attacking me personally. However, I respectfully just don't agree with that assessment. But I gtg to bed (have a final exam tomorrow) if this board is still active by then I will respond with a longer post detailing why I don't agree.

remember many Muslims don't live in free societies

DUH....I know that. What's your excuse for the ones who live in OUR free society???? Where they CAN voice their outrage and whatever-the-hell 'decent' means???

Check out the many links here on FR, get educated.

If you want...post your OWN links, to educate us, on how this religion and its 'individuals' rose up against the hijackers of their religion. Post your OWN links to show us how these 'religious individuals' are working to PROVE that they have a ROP.

My broadbrush and I are retiring for the night. I'm SURE someone else can muss up your rose-colored glasses and rub your touchy-feely the wrong way.

If American Muslims, all 2 million of them, stood up, en masse, and condemned radical Islam, al Zarqawi would not be swayed by this action in the slightest.

IOW, American Muslims are NOT the problem.
