Islamic leaders demand apology for 'hate-filled remarks'

Evangelist Pat Robertson is in trouble with U.S. Islamic organizations for saying Muslims should not serve in the president's Cabinet or as judges.

Pat Robertson

In an appearance on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" Sunday, Robertson, who ran for president in 1988, said if were elected he would not appoint Muslims to his Cabinet and that he was not in favor of Muslims serving as judges.

"They have said in the Quran there's a war against all the infidels," Robertson said. "Do you want somebody like that sitting as a judge? I wouldn't."

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations yesterday called on "mainstream political and religious leaders" to repudiate the "hate-filled remarks."

"This type of hate-filled rhetoric deserves repudiation from all who respect America's long-standing tradition of pluralism," said Rabiah Ahmed, CAIR's communication coordinator.

Ahmed said many Muslims already serve with distinction in many levels of government, including judgeships at the state and local level.

Arsalan Iftikhar, CAIR's national legal director, said Robertson "has taken his far-right-wing rhetoric to absurd levels."

"He is trying to perpetuate this notion that Islam is a monolithic entity inherently at odds with modernity and democracy," Iftikhar said. "That is absolutely false. ... American Muslims have long been contributing members of American society.

Iftikhar added: "And I guarantee to Mr. Robertson that Muslims will one day become part of the federal bench -- whether or not he likes it."

Muslims were particularly outraged by a 2002 appearance on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" program in which Robertson said about Islam's prophet, Muhammad: "This man was an absolute wild-eyed fanatic. He was a robber and a brigand. And to say that these terrorists distort Islam, they're carrying out Islam. ... I mean, this man (Muhammad) was a killer. And to think that this is a peaceful religion is fraudulent."

Robertson also called Islam "a monumental scam" and claimed the Quran "is strictly a theft of Jewish theology."

Okay you are still missing the point as is your friend. You cannot demonize a whole group of people who did nothing. You keep talking about Islam did this or list Islams contributions. You are just dehumanizing the whole thing, this religion is made up of INDIVIDUALS, each one responsible for their own actions, yes some have under the name committed heinous crimes, but we must be prudent and just and punish those responsible, not innocent people who had nothing to do with the crime.

You mean like we 'demonized' Germany, Japan, Italy, The Soviet Union + Communism and so on?

BZZZZZZZZ......wrong answer.

We most certainly CAN demonize a whole group "who did nothing" because the biggest part of what they did NOT do is

SPEAK UP AGAINST THE ACTS THAT OTHERS COMMITT IN THE NAME OF ISLAM.

Get back to us when they do that -- just once -- and we'll talk.

Well yes, if you say Germany did this or Japan did that, or the Soviet Union did this then you would still be painting with too broad a brush stroke. Hitler did this, Stalin did that, individuals who murdered under those regimes are responsible, but you don't label every German, Soviet, or Japanese citizen as a butcher, in fact many of them were the victims. The same holds for Islam, in fact everday those terrorists kill MUSLIM Iraqis in grotesque ways such as car bombings. It is dangerous and unjust to have such a simpleton view about it.

IMhO

to assess right or wrong:

1) What is the priority goal involved?

2) What is the criteria/standard of measure which determines that the goal has been reached?

3) What is the context?

1) This is war. Robertson is far more right than wrong. He is right about Islam and huge numbers of Islamists who want to see us in ruins if not wholesale conquered and taken over.

2) The priority goal ought to be our survival AS A BASICALLY (used to be) CHRISTIAN NATION

3) Given a priority goal of our survival--Robertson is right.

4) A President doesn't need to admit to anyone what his criteria for judges are.

5) If down the road there's a truly qualified, sane, non aggressive 'reformed' Islamist suitable for a judgeship after this war has been won--we can reconsider it.

Actually, that day won't arrive. Christ will return first. Islam will be utterly nonexistent.

Their are money Muslim groups who have denounced the Muslim murderers. Their are many Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting those terrorists, how about all the Muslims who have joined the police forces and armed forces of Iraq and are fighting the terrorists? You can only say they have been silent if you have had your ears shut. What about the head Shiite Cleric of Iraq and his stated support for democracy? Man I could just go on and on about how the Muslims are fighting this off.

What do you propose be done about the thousands, of sleepers in however many sleeper cells plotting our utter destruction this very minute?

WITHIN OUR BORDERS--AND MORE OUTSIDE OUR BOARDERS!

You can go on and on but until they do it in front of a microphone so the entire country can hear them, it means nothing.

I think Howlin is frustrated that Muslim organizations in the US sound more like the ACLU rather than groups as outraged as most citizens about Muslim terrorists. Just a guess. CAIR et al don't have a clue, and it fuels the anti Muslim bigotry in the US big time. Maybe that is their intent, to try to make Muslims in the US feel isolated and dissaffected, and thus more subject to their control. It's the oldest trick in the book.
