My empoyeer specified Netscape because that is what their intranet web pages were coded for. ???

html is html - unless they are scripted to reject IE I don't see the problem. I can see them chosing to run only IE if they use Active X, but, to my knowledge, their is no technology that can only be run on Netscape.

There are tons of differences between standard HTML and the extensions Netscape and Microsoft have added to their browsers. Netscape also is the most poorly implemented browser in that it is not compeltely standard.

Thats not true, a basic hello world page will be the same no matter what but try to put a transparent png into a page and render in ie6, try creating tables with empty cells and render in ff vs ie6. There are differences..
to top it off for the longest time microsoft put its own jvm out with ie that would have apps work there that would be fubar with suns..
