Odessa isn't Dallas or Houston. It's a lot closer to a New Mexico town than to a Texas town. It's an icky, ugly, sandstormy town, much like Lubbock except smaller.
Plus, it has HUGE spiders all over it. (My grandparents lived in Odessa, and they had spiders on their porch the size of saucers.)
Probably tarantulas on your grandparents porch. I think the residents of Odessa would take exception about being classified as being closer to a New Mexico town. I was raised out there in that icky, ugly sandstormy Permian Basin, actually I kinda like it out there. The sky seems a lot bigger, even with all the sand in the air, but at least it's not smog.
