CAMERON DIAZ
NRO-TC ^ | April 23, 2005 | Andrew Stuttaford

Posted on 04/25/2005 2:47:00 PM PDT by swilhelm73

In appearance Cameron Diaz is someone lovely enough to make me believe – if only for a second – in ‘intelligent design’ - but even those most inclined to give her the benefit of every doubt have to contend with the sneaky, troubling, suspicion that she is as dumb as a particularly stupid rock. First there were those ‘rape’ comments during the election, and now there is this:

“The 32-year-old Diaz, who earns a reported $20-million a movie, boasted that the cow-dung slathered walls of a Nepalese village hut were "beautiful" and "inspiring," and she called the primitive practice of "pounding mud" with sticks to construct a building foundation "the coolest thing."

There is something rather disgusting about the richest of the rich world rejoicing in the primitive squalor from which mankind is – all too slowly – emerging. There is also something profoundly condescending and, at its root, maybe even racist, in the way that Diaz (and, read the terrific article on all this nonsense here, Drew Barrymore too) appear to imagine that the third worlders trapped in desperate poverty do not share in the material aspirations of the more fortunate portions of humanity.

And as, for those ‘spiritual’ values that Diaz purports to find in picturesque hellholes such as Bhutan, I suspect that, given the chance, most of those bowers, scrapers and chanters would be pleased to junk their shamans, temples and priests in favour of running water, electricity and decent education.

And they would be right to.

electricity-free Chilean village,

Chile is the most advanced country in South America.

Electricity free?

Sounds like another "Village" movie.

Why don't the tree-huggers in California throw off the shackles of modern plumbing and electricity and "rough" it?

I've tried suggesting such a policy to environmentalists worried about America's use of fossil fuels and the impending global warming apocalypse that such will supposedly bring about. So far, I've gotten no takers - which is all the evidence I need to see they know they are full of crap.

Why is it ok to make blond jokes virtually anywhere and by anyone but jokes about any other race, ethnicity or religious persuasion or stereotype is considered racist and taboo?

There's no punch line, I'm serious.

Yes, I know that blondes come in many nationalities, races and religions so it's slightly different. But I still find it ironic.

I'm not easily offended or anything. Some of the blond jokes are hilarious and sometimes true. It's just something I've thought about and have never heard anyone bring up.

...and yes, I'm blonde (though male..)

I fully expect to get razzed and flamed for this post...

Q:What did the blonde say after the doctor told her she was pregnant?

A:Is it mine?

Who cares about her lack of a second brain cell?

Does it matter? It's not what she's hired for.

Sorry, but she is not terribly attractive, either.

Without makeup or a tan, nobodies attractive.

Sorry, we really can't razz or flame you; you're blonde - it would be like torturing puppies. ;o

Well said, by Mr. Stuttaford; and by contrast, for sure, Cameron and Drew would not want to waste cow dung; by using it for 'their' house walls either. Despite how 'cool' it really is. . .

. . .or maybe that should be. . .how cool is it. . .really?

And from California as well. Two for two on the intelligence by hair color and geography meter. Tell us you are a public school teacher (sports) and you have the triple crown.

I realize that most of the posts to this thread relate to the blonde bombshells, but, back to the tone of the article. . .

I think the author is wrong, as well. The rest of the world does not sit around wasting time wishing they were us! He presumes that what motivates us also motivates everyone else.

If Diaz was expressing the observation that primitive peoples find purpose and happiness without our level of material wealth, then I would agree. I wish I could find more satisfaction in simple things. (Of course, our service economy would go down the tubes if everyone succeeded in this endeavor! :)
