That's silly. They showed my friend how, as a nervous first mom, and wouldn't release my friend and her baby from the hospital until mom and baby were nursing well. All the pamplets and instructions were about the benefits of breastfeeding over formula. Feeding baby really shouldn't be a political issue.
Then your friend had some good nurses. Most hospitals don't tell the mother that it takes a day or two for the milk to come in. They put pressure on the mother by saying "If you don't have milk by tomorrow morning then we'll have to start formula". Babies don't need to eat right away after their born. It's just a scare tactic from the formula producers.
You would be surprised how few women breastfeed. When I had my last child, for example, out of the 15 babies born that day, only three were breastfeeding. I will also tell you that my baby would nurse well, but then sleep for several hours. The nurses tried to panic me about that because she wasn't up every 2 hours eating. The baby was sleeping and I could not wake her! They kept telling me that if she didn't eat soon, they were going to give her a bottle. I ended up telling them she nursed when she didn't, just to get them to leave us alone.
