One of the most exciting things I saw in today's television reporting (and it was simply a fluke that I happened to be home to see it) was the hundreds of Romans pelting along the streets to get to St. Peter's for the announcement and the first blessing. They had managed to stop traffic on some of the big streets and were virtually crawling over the cars to get there.

There's still a spark of faith left in Europe. I hope Benedict XVI can fan the flame.

OH - that I could not see - though the early posters on this thread told of the rush to Vatican Square by the throngs of overjoyed people.

"There's still a spark of faith left in Europe. I hope Benedict XVI can fan the flame".

Amen - so desperately needed - let's pray he can.

MSNBC showed the new Pope's hometown. The townspeople were out in the streets - overjoyed at this news. Then later the streets were empty. Reason? All were in the Town's central church rejoicing together in the church over this wonderful news.

The people of Germany need this spark of faith fanned for sure - but it is a delight that at least for today it burned brightly.
