I have another non-Catholic question. Is there a specific reference regarding the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church written for those of us who are not familar with church doctrine?

IOW, a "Catholic Doctrine for Dummies" LOL!

At over 800 pages, it is decidedly not "for Dummies," but it is comprehensive and exact. And the new Pope was the president of the commission that, under John Paul, put together the Catechism of the Catholic Church

You might want to consider a book written by the new Pope regarding the Catholic faith: Called to Communion: Understanding the Church Today

There IS a "Catholicism for Dummies". But if you are looking for an official summary, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is the real scivy and not THAT hard to understand. Question and Answer format.
