I am free to express my opinion.

Yes. But you are not limitlessly free to express it on FreeRepublic.

She's supposed to be off the thread, so for her own benefit, she probably won't answer you, which, IMHO is a good thing for you and me..... :-)

Yeah, I know.

Frankly though, if they don't hate us, we must be doing something wrong, y'know?

That's the picture I want for the wall!

I am not a Catholic, but I just have to say this: he's the absolute deadon picture of what a Pope should look like, IMO.

And he makes a cute little Pope. (Can I say that? LOL)

I agree. Who knows what we would have done. I'd probably be saying "yes, sir, Herr Hitler, sir." One never knows where strength will come from. I do think two facts mitigate his past: One, he took vows afterwards, which necessarily required soul searching and atonement for his actions, whether voluntary or not and Two: JPII called him a friend.

I think this guy's going to be good, I just don't think he'll last too long.

Speaking as someone who had a great aunt who lived to be 106, don't be too sure.

I predict 12 years. 12 years of glory and righteous truth.

Regards, Ivan

Any time.

They ought to make me a moderator, so when I get a timeout, I can reverse it.

My favorite quote so far was from Stephanopoulis. "You'll have to remember that this is an old man. He is 78, so this won't be a long papacy."

My great-uncle is 88 years young. Still chops wood, drives across country to see relatives and went on a flight in an ultralight a couple of years ago. He's vital, healthy and I hope will be around for several more years, God willing.

Stephanopoulis was licking his wounds. May their wounds run for a long long time.

You are so right. I share the JOY today even though I am not myself Catholic. The lower case letter c for catholic means UNIVERSAL, and that is what our shared beliefs and prayers are today. May they continue.

It sure makes you wonder about how "faithful" they are in their religion.

I'm not aware of earlier comments, but I'd think having a man as Pope who wasn't perfect as a young man, but who found his way to God...would be wonderful and should be a source of great hope for everyone.

Just watching EWTN's coverage via the Internet at work. A woman called in, said she is a Baptist organist and after watching EWTN's coverage of the funeral and conclave, she now wants to become a Catholic! Raymond was speechless ... but not for long.

Oh, that's wonderful news!!

God bless Mother Angelica!! Happy Birthday, Mother!

Yes, Happy Birthday Mother Angelica! I can imagine the joy in the cloister right now!

This thread is moving so fast that by the time I'd found anything on Linus, I'd lost your post! Anyway, here is a link: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09272b.htm
Maybe it's the news, but it's loading very slowly.

He is not a Benedictine. There is only one current Cardinal from that order. I admit, it is a stretch, but there is some connection. Just Google "St. Malachy" and "Benedict XVI" and you'll see.
