Let me get this straight...if I don't agree with your religious beliefs, then automatically I hate you??? Shades of Islam!

Again, get off this thread; your only reason for being here is absolutely to show your butt.

Gee, I guess this means...uh...no women priests or same-sex marriage in the church for the next few years... [irony]

You can hear the liberal wailing and gnashing of teeth. McBrien sounded crestfallen and devastated, struggling to find something to say. Perhaps worried whether he will have a job next week.

The LSM and Dim hatred of this pope b/c he (apparently -- I don't know his theology, just assuming from what I have read) actually reads and takes the Bible seriously will further push Roman Catholics into the Republican camp.

A nice side benefit.

It goes back to the Benedictine Order founded by St. Benedict. I don't have the exact details, but I did read about this for quite a while.

I hope Pope Benedict lasts longer than
the first John Paul.

i'm still trying to find the office of Pope in my bible...

In Isaiah 22, we see the existence of the historical office of the vice-regent (king) of the kingdom of David. In the king's absence, the vice-regent held full plenary authority. As a sign of his authority, the vice-regent wore a pouch around his neck which contained a key --the key to the kingdom.

In the passage from Isaiah, we see this office being transferred from Shebna to Eliakim:

Isaiah 22:20-23

"In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will be a seat of honor for the house of his father.

Jesus is the eternal king of the House of David who is the power behind the keys.
Revelation 3:7

These are the words of him who is holy and true [Jesus], who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.

When Jesus gives Peter the "keys to the kingdom," he is placing Peter in the office of vice-regent of the eternal House of David, Christ's Church:
Matthew 16:18-19

I tell you that you are Rock (Peter), and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Benedictines (Followers of Benedict) are know as "Olivetians". Series.

Yeah, I missed that earlier. I was in the shower.

Is Ratzinger a Benedictine?

Well, I don't know how soon, but I've been wanting to go for about 10 years. After Pope John Paul death, I was so saddened that I had not had the chance to see him in person, I wasn't sure I wanted to go. Then I was leery of who the new Pontiff would be. But now? Yes, back on. It would be fun to take an FR group.

I would have restarted the Crusades TODAY.

How do you know he hasn't?

Ratzinger would have been about six years old when the Nazis came to power, about twelve when WWII started, and about eighteen when it ended; for people to call him a "Nazi" because he was conscripted into the German Army for a brief period is really going too far.

Good job. The liberals at DU are going nuts.

Are they mad? Too bad.

Yes. Their word of the day starts with the "ph" sound. LOL.

Ratzinger at best is a caretaker Pope and will not be able address the many concerns and problems the Church has at this point in time.

You have no idea what the future will hold. More than anything else, the election of Ratzinger means that the Catholic Church has recognized the need to stand firm on its principles in an era when there is a lot of popular pressure to abandon them.

Perhaps Arinze will be next!

The LORD knows :-). Cardinal Arinze is getting on, and I recall reading that he hoped to return to Africa for his last years. The new Pope is pretty spry, and in, say, 10 years, there will be a new crop of great, younger Cardinals from all over the world. I still hope to see an African Pope in my lifetime - about the next 50 years!

Something about a live thread like this one brings out the jerks.

I'm sure we have a few DU trolls who have wandered over to pee in our cornflakes today; I see a few who just signed up today.
