Benedict XV served during WWI and was a failed peacemaker.

From Wikipedia:

Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria, the son of a police officer who was staunchly anti-Nazi. In 1937 Ratzinger's father retired and settled in the town of Traunstein. When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941, he was required by law to join the Hitler Youth , but according to his biographer John Allen he was not an enthusiastic member. In 1943, at the age of 16 he was, along with the rest of his class, drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps, responsible for the guarding of a BMW plant outside Munich. He was then sent for basic infantry training and was posted to Hungary, where he worked setting up anti-tank defences until he deserted in April 1944 (an offence punishable by death). In 1945 he was briefly held in an Allied POW camp. By June he was released, and he and his brother (Georg) entered a Catholic seminary.

I really thought they would go with the Italian, but as Chris Wallace describes Ratzing's philosophy, he sounds like a very good choice.

I'm not too keen on the name Benedict, but then, I know nothing of Catholic Popes. I'll read up on his namesake so I won't think "Arnold" everytime I hear his name.

Does it bother anyone that he was Nazi Youth?

In my opinion, it shouldn't. Membership was virtually mandatory when he was a kid. He's had a lifetime to learn why Nazism is wrong so I doubt it influences his views.

8. The Labor of the Son. JOHN PAUL II. 1978-2005. Pope John Paul II was the most traveled Pope in history. He circled the globe numerous times, preaching to huge audiences everywhere he went. He survived an assassination attempt. He has written a book which has enjoyed a large circulation. Like the sun which never ceases to labor and provides light daily, this Pope has been incessant. He was born on May 18, 1920. On that date in the morning there was a near total eclipse of the sun over Europe. Prophecy - The 110th Pope is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse, or, From the Toil of the Sun). Like the sun he came out of the East (Poland).

9. The Glory of the Olive. The Order of St. Benedict has said this Pope will come from their order. It is interesting that Jesus gave his apocalyptic prophecy about the end of time from the Mount of Olives. This Pope will reign during the beginning of the tribulation Jesus spoke of. The 111th prophesy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil.

10. PETER THE ROMAN - This final Pope will likely be Satan, taking the form of a man named Peter who will gain a worldwide allegiance and adoration. He will be the final antichrist which prophecy students have long foretold. If it were possible, even the very elect would be deceived. The 112th prophesy states: "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End."

Oh yes, long live Pope Benedict XVI.

His election is also a wonderful tribute to John Paul the Great.

I'll admit I'm disappointed, but not for the same reason the liberals are, i.e., Ratzinger's orthodoxy. I was hoping for one of the younger, Third-World guys, because that's where the church is growing.

Why is he a good choice?

He's the one who made sure that everyone was on the same page, doctrinally speaking. Needless to say if anyone was waiting around for women priests they're going to be disappointed.

OK, I trust you folks, but it is still a little rattling, especially when you consider the Church's relation to the Holocaust.

Didn't Malachay (sp) predict that this pope would come from the Benedictines? Creepy. And I don't believe him!
