My guess is the perp was contemplating whether or not to do something to the girl. Not much info in the story. What does "appeared to linger" mean? Did he or didn't he? My guess is he isn't too experienced at committing felonies.

You're probably not far from the mark. He's with the War Resistors League. They don't believe in prisons. They think crime is best remedied by having lots of social programs. Says so right on their website. So unless he's a hypocrite, he'll ask that the shooter be spared prison time and instead be given a check, a discussion group and a counselor.

It just may be that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Home invasions by your all-purpose thug are not all that common even on the upper Upper West Side. I would not be surprised to see a very different story to emerge within the next few days.

You've got to admit this fellow has Darwin Award potential. I for one hope he has a full recovery with the capacity to learn from the experience, but am not optimistic on the latter.
