CBS Newsman Bob Schieffer, Biased or Clueless?

CBS Newsman Bob Schieffer was again heralded by Walter Cronkite as the man that should have taken over the anchor desk when Cronkite retired in 1981. In a long fluff piece for Cronkite in the Sunday edition of the Arizona Republic, TV writer Bill Goodykoontz quotes Cronkite again bashing Dan Rather, "[Bob] Schieffer is just a wonderful newsman and a very fine broadcaster," Cronkite said. "I have felt all along that he should have been my successor rather than Rather."
Fair enough. Dan Rather did turn out to be a narcissistic anchorman that appeared to believe he was more important than the news. But how can we believe the man that was once "the most trusted man in America" when he sports this type of idiocy in the same article.
"The fact that readership of newspapers is down and the viewing of news on television is down - in the network form, that is - with that, we should consider that democracy is in danger," Cronkite told The AZ Republic.
Democracy is in danger? Sad.

"[Bob] Schieffer is just a wonderful newsman and a very fine broadcaster," Cronkite said. "I have felt all along that he should have been my successor rather than Rather." Cronkite, Rather, Schieffer, et al really need to get over themselves. They read news items before a camera for gosh sakes'. How tough is that and what special skills does it require?

Given that a healthy democracy is based upon an informed electorate...and further given that most Americans these day rely more and more on very biased and divisive news sources (regardless of from which end of the political spectrum they originate), I'm not sure what there is in Cronkite's statement to which you take exception.

we should consider that democracy is in danger," Cronkite told The AZ Republic. The only thing in danger is the "evening news" and "evening news anchors".

CBS News has clearly learned diddly squat from Rathergate. Its "news" continues down the same flawed and dishonest path. The only thing in Bob Schieffer's favor is that he did not, at least, base his grossly dishonest reporting on any forged documents.
Thank God for (very) small favors.

I do not think ANYONE working for the networks OR any cable news truly grasps reporting vs spin.
If anything a journalism degree is an impediment rather than an asset.
