Steinbrenner Angry As Yanks Fall to 4-8
ABC News ^

BALTIMORE Apr 17, 2005 — George Steinbrenner is tired of waiting for his New York Yankees to get going. Now he's angry. Miguel Tejada hit his eighth career grand slam, and the Baltimore Orioles roughed up Kevin Brown and completed a three-game sweep of New York with an 8-4 victory Sunday. The last-place Yankees (4-8) have dropped four straight and eight of 10 overall.

"Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed as I'm sure all Yankee fans are by the lack of performance by our team," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued immediately after the game.

"It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around."

Melvin Mora also homered for the Orioles, who took a 6-0 lead in the second inning and coasted to their sixth win in seven games. Baltimore improved to 5-1 against New York this season after their first sweep of the Yankees since 2000.

Tejada went 3-for-4 with two doubles, raising his batting average to .375 and his AL-leading RBI total to 18. He went 6-for-12 with eight RBIs in the series.

Daniel Cabrera (1-1) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings, and streaking Brian Roberts went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored a run. Roberts, who has a hit in all 12 games this season, is batting .449.

Ruben Sierra and Alex Rodriguez homered for the Yankees, whose four-game losing streak matches their longest skid of 2004. New York, which went 14-5 against Baltimore a year ago, has been outscored by the Orioles 47-26 this season.

Making his 2005 debut after spending the first two weeks on the disabled list with a strained back, Brown (0-1) allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out three.

Brown retired the first two batters in the first inning before Mora hit his second homer. Tejada then doubled and scored on a single by Sammy Sosa, who went to third on a double by Rafael Palmeiro before Brown retired Gibbons on a fly ball.

The Yankee farm system is depleted. The reason they had some much trouble getting Johnson was they didn't many prospects to offer.

What's the deal with the Orioles and the Nationals sharing a cable network?

Even during the season opener, the Red Sox hit him hard. They were just hit to guys in the field.

The Os beat the Yanks 5 times last season and they are already at 5 wins against them and it's only April. They always played the Sox hard but were meek against the Yankees.

Baltimore hammered him as well but they got out slugged in their only loss to the Yanks so far.

Usually the Sox would split with the Yankees during the regular season but would lose the division to them because the Yankees would have a better record against the other AL East clubs.

The Yanks are 4-8 this season, and 4-12 over their last 16 games. Heh.

Go Nationals!

We're better than the Yankees right now! ROFL. The Tigers are 5-7.

And didn't Joe put Rivera in a game where the Yankees were leading by 2 or 3 runs? You know your star closer is in trouble when he's being put in those kind of games.

Those games are still save situations. Most teams will use their closers there.

That said, as a Twins fan for 35 years I am delighted to see the Yankees supporting the rest of their division.

I saw that. Was relieved too, because the big unit has a certain aura of "power." It's nice to see that deflated in the minds of the Sox batters.

Uh, George .... YOU are the guy who assembled a 175 year old starting rotation.

Dead wood like Bernie, Giambi, Womack, Sierra, and the return of Tino Martinez?????!!!!! doesn't help them either. Not to mention acquiring the Curse of ARod. But as long as you're gonna have ARod -- who's a GREAT player, just cursed -- you should upgrade your defense by playing him at short instead of take two steps to his right backhand the ball jump in the air fall backward lob a throw to first base and get some fat catcher by a half step Jeter.

I don't know. I think it has something to do with O's owner, our mini-Steinbrenner, trying to screw the Nationals, anyway possible because the teams are 45 miles apart. It's "draining" revenue from the Orioles so he's trying to keep the team off the airwaves. Comcast Sports, our cable provider in parts of Maryland, has broadcast all of the O's games, as well as UPN network. The Nats are hurting for a local station to show their games that can be seen by all the area residents at once. We have several cable providers in the DC-MD-VA area. O's owner, Peter Angelos, has been putting pressure on anyone he can, from MLB on down, to mess up the Nats. That's about all I know.
