Woman says she was just trying to pay rent; officer misses hearing.

An Austin woman who was ticketed while begging for money in a bikini had her case dismissed Thursday when the officer who issued the ticket didn't appear in court.

Wearing a bikini top under her T-shirt, Stephanie Bryan, 25, walked out of the municipal courtroom with her arms raised in victory.

She had been charged with soliciting from a roadway and faced $180 in fines. The police officer who filed the case couldn't attend the hearing, and Judge Kenneth Vitucci denied a motion to postpone the court date, a prosecutor said.

Bryan said that she and her friend, Alexis Caraway, panhandled in bikinis in the median at Burnet Road and U.S. 183 because they had been laid off from their jobs.

Caraway's case is pending. Bryan, a graduate of Texas State University with a degree in business, said she had been laid off as a finance manager for a truck dealership in Buda.

She also had worked for a magazine until her paychecks started bouncing, she said. Since then, she said, she's been laid off from a job as a credit manager at a radio station.

Holding up signs with messages such as "Rent is due," she and Caraway made several hundred dollars panhandling for about 10 days in July, she said.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Bryan said.

But none of that really matters now, she said cheerfully. She's giving up the hot streets of Austin and moving to Alaska next week to sell jewelry to cruise ship passengers.

"I want to make a lot of money," she said.

I think I had nightmares about the picture of 72 Helen Thomas's awaiting muslim suicide bombers.

That would make anyone loose sleep - or worse.

I think there were plenty of people donating to them that day.

Doesn't surprise me. Seriously though, if these young women are arrested for panhandling, I want to see a clean sweep of the haggled-looking bums too! At least these ladies probably provided some eye-candy. :-)

Hey cool--a fellow Jeff Ward listener. I never ever see him mentioned here. It was pretty funny. The girls seemed to have a sense of humor about themselves and what they were doing. At least they don't sound as scary as some of the panhandlers around my office and neighborhood. The police sure don't seem to bug THEM.

These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy Flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the smelliest beggar in town to beg outside their shop. When all the customers stayed away, they shut down, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

There were some people calling in to the PM talk show who said the two were good looking and er, well endowed .

I myself would like to see some of the trashy panhandlers arrested too. There are some on 183 & 620 who look like they haven't had a bath in months.

This guy has no problem panhandling in NYC. Maybe she should get a guitar and say she's entertaining :-)

Yeah. We listen to Jeff on the way home almost every day. He does have some really off the wall topics, but that seems to make the drive shorter. Some of his callers are way out in left field.

Any of you Austinites remember Leslie? He, yes Leslie is a man, use to don a bikini and set up shop in downtown or along some other major roadway in the Texas Capital.

I remember when I first moved there in 1995 and got my first look at Leslie, almost drove off the road!

NO PICTURES OF LESLEY (LESLIE?) ALLOWED!

Those girls would probably get a buck or two from me.

Burnet and 183 you say? Must have missed them.

Rats.

Is that the one who looks like Jerry Garcia's half-brother? I see him on occasion, every time I think to myself, "It doesn't look like he's missed too many meals".. :^)

The one I'm talking about frequents the Lakecreek PKY & 183 frontage or Lakecreek & 620 intersections. Sometimes there is a female (I think) wearing trashy clothes with him.

YUP... BubbaTex also know him. He wears a tutu in downtown Austin and lives in a box or whatever. He actually ran for mayor twice the past few years.

Leslie for Mayor? He would have had my vote! He couldn't have done any worse than Kirk Watson!

I was in Austin just yesterday.

Based on what I saw, the cop didn't ticket her as part of an effort to do something about begging.
