Veterans need more recognition [UCLA Daily Bruin]
UCLA Daily Bruin ^ | May 18, 2005 | David Keyes

It's rather strange when you stop to think about it. Just a stone's throw away from UCLA there are thousands and thousands of bodies buried beneath the ground. Uniform white tombstones rather unceremoniously mark the graves of U.S. veterans.

The street is called Veteran, after all, for a reason.

Dedicated in 1889, the Los Angeles National Cemetery is the burial site for American soldiers of nearly every war of the past century, including both world wars, Korea, Vietnam and more. Neat rows of tombstones run parallel for as long as the eye can see.

Large grass fields await the fallen soldiers of the inevitable next war. For if there is one certainty, it is the continued folly and subsequent bloodshed of all people.

I wonder how often we students, and all humanity for that matter, stop to think about the great sacrifices of our veterans. A bit of reflection is the least we can do. Though they are buried just meters from our homes, their lives and sacrifices are all too often forgotten.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CFC-A Release: Information Leads To Arrest Of 3 IED Facilitators

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – A raid to capture improvised explosive device facilitators near Khowst city May 16 by Afghan and Coalition forces resulted in the capture of three IED facilitators. One of the three was a known remote-controlled improvised explosive device facilitator.

The three IED facilitators were detained in a series of compounds after Coalition forces were led to their locations by a local informant.

An Afghan man was killed in the raid after he ignored both a verbal warning from an interpreter and a warning shot from Coalition forces. The man was in the home of the known IED facilitator when he was killed.

Coalition forces made every attempt to limit the use of force to stop the man’s threatening actions. Coalition forces reported that as they entered the house the man was told through an interpreter to stop but he continued to act aggressively by moving toward a container atop a dresser. As he continued, a warning shot was fired in hopes of convincing the man to cease his actions. He continued to move toward the container and a Coalition soldier, feeling threatened by his actions, shot and killed the man.

Regional Command East leadership has met with local religious leaders and political officials to discuss the incident. A civil and military affairs team has also been sent to the village to offer assistance.

Khowst city has been the scene of a number of IED and other attacks in recent weeks, causing a heightened sense of awareness for forces operating there.

The incident is currently under investigation by Coalition officials.
