Italian hostage 'not well' but alive -- and captors demand Islamic law provisions as condition for release
"Italian hostage 'not well' but alive," from UPI, with Jeffrey Imm:
Kabul, Afghanistan, May. 21 (UPI) -- An Italian relief worker taken hostage in Kabul is alive, but unwell, her alleged captor said during a phone call, the ANSA news agency reported Saturday.
Clementina Contini, kidnapped Monday in the Afghan capital, "is not well and has an infection in one eye," according to a caller who identified himself as Temor Shah.
In a series of at least five ultimatums phoned in to a French news organization and all postponed before the deadline, Contini's kidnapper demanded Afghanistan ban the sale of alcoholic drinks, cancel a TV program considered offensive by Islamic fundamentalists, and improve the condition of the madrassas, or Islamic religious schools.

"The U.S.-Mexico border is becoming more violent."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The feds have been alerted through a memo to law enforcement throughout the southwest, telling them that Mexican commandos are now working for drug cartels.
You'll be shocked to learn where the commandos were trained.
The memo from the Justice Department warns that Mexican commandos were trained by U.S. forces, but switched sides. They are now using their deadly skills to work for the drug cartels.
They were elite forces trained by the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, \Georgia to battle against the powerful drug cartels.
They're known as "los zetas," but a memo from the Justice Department to police agencies in the southwest warns that some of those commandos changed sides and are now working with drug smugglers.
Sheriff Tony Estrada says, "Things like that are a concern to us, especially trained here on the U.S. side. They've gotten pretty special training in reguards to areas they were supposed to specialize. Now, they are working with drug traffickers on the Mexican side."
Using the commando training, Los Zetas are known to be extremely violent and have been blamed for an outbreak of violence along the Mexican border."
The two articles on biological and nuclear threats are must read, IMO, but not right before trying to go to sleep!
Just checking in - have had "difficulties" lately keeping me from much FR time.
Scarey, scarey stuff that.
Well, good to see you here little jeremiah and I hope your 'difficulties" get resolved.

Local Police Turn In Weapons Cache in Eastern Afghanistan
American Forces Press Service
BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, May 21, 2005 Local police turned in a large cache of unstable ammunition to members of the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, near Ghazni, Afghanistan, on May 19, coalition officials announced today.
"These munitions are incredibly dangerous and volatile," said Master Sgt. Albert Schneider, the noncommissioned officer in charge of Combined Joint Task Force 76's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team. "When they are stored in non-climate-controlled environments and they are not properly handled, they can pose a huge risk to nearby communities."
Schneider also said such items can be used in constructing improvised explosive devices, which he called "indiscriminate killers."
"That police and Afghan (civilians) are turning these items into us is not surprising," he said. "They realize the dangers (such items) represent."
The cache, which consisted of more then 450 rocket-propelled grenades and 36 recoilless-rifle rounds, was determined to be unstable and will be transported to a safe location for destruction by EOD personnel.

"Police Chiefs: Federal Officials Ignore Their Homeland Security Expertise"
MARK SHERMAN
Associated Press
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cooperation on homeland security often is a one-way street, with federal authorities ignoring advice from state and local counterparts, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Chiefs said Tuesday."
...."I will stay in small town America"...........
Mr. RR and I just returned from a road trip to southern Colorado. (had to visit a sick relative) The trip from Rapid City, SD. to Cheyenne, Wy. was wonderful. Very little traffic, good weather. No problems. We traveled on I-25 from Cheyenne,Wy. to Pueblo, Co. It was a nightmare. Two years ago this trip (from Rapid City to Pueblo, Co.) took eight hours. This time, it was eleven hours. The traffic was unbelievable! And this is in the wild, wild, wide open west! I can't even imagine what is happening on the coastal areas. Around Denver and Colorado Springs we were caught in traffic jams that were comparable to ones we have been in Shanghai and Mexico City.
What a mess.
I agree. Think I will stay home. Everything I need I can find right here.
A side note.......seemed like every other car was full of "other than Caucasians".

Thanks for the update on Dr. Lull's murder.
"Despite the missing car and apparent credit card theft, Pera said investigators aren't convinced that robbery was the sole motive for Lull's killing. "
Yikes ... I hope they don't decide to do that in the states!

All things must pass, and I see lessons from God in everything that happens. Often more lessons in the "difficulties".
Some things could pass quicker, though...
