"Queen Mary 2 to Dock in Brooklyn"
Newsday ^ | April 16th, 2005 | Associated Press

Posted on 04/16/2005 11:45:21 AM PDT by M. Espinola

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW YORK -- Four luxurious passenger ships, including the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth 2, will abandon Manhattan's Hudson River piers and begin docking in Brooklyn next year.

Carnival Corp. will move the berths of the four ships to a huge pier the city is redeveloping in the Red Hook section, city and company officials said.

The city hopes the shift will create thousands of jobs, spur retail and tourist-industry development and breathe new life into what was once a bleak warehouse district, and bring 250,000 more passengers to the city each year on top of the current 900,000."

16 Nabbed In Indian Call Center Scam - Allegedly Cheated Citibank Customers Out Of $350,000 (4/16/05)

Apr 16, 2005 8:56 am US/Eastern PUNE, India (AP) Police have arrested 16 people in western India for allegedly cheating four New York-based Citibank customers out of nearly $350,000, a police officer said Saturday.

Three former employees at a call center in the city of Pune and 13 of their associates have been charged with misusing financial data and illegally withdrawing money from the accounts of the New York-based customers, said Sanjay Jadhav, an assistant commissioner of police.

Nine of the suspects were in custody and being questioned for their role in the money transfer fraud, while seven were remanded to judicial custody, he said.

Jadhav said the call center employees befriended the customers by “talking pleasantly” to them and then “obtained the personal identification number of the customers and used the international wire transfer system to move the funds.”

Three employees at that call center transferred cash from customers accounts and shared sensitive financial information with friends outside the company, police said.

The fraud became known when Citibank customers complained about unauthorized money transfers and the bank traced them to Pune, Jadhav said.

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY ASKS IF TOWN IS BEING "HELD HOSTAGE"
OVER CANCELLED PRAYER MEETING FOR AMERICAN HOSTAGE?

The town of LaPorte, Ind. is still waiting for word about one of its own: contractor Jeffrey Ake who was kidnaped at a construction site in Baghdad around midday last Monday.

And after the unexplained cancellation of a LaPorte Friday evening prayer vigil for Ake (www.lpchamber.com), a writer on one Christian ministry Internet site is asking whether the town is being "held hostage" by Ake's captors?

Ake, who owns Equipment Express (www.equipmentexpress24.com/About%20Us/lpha-success.shtml), was in Iraq to construct a means to allow water bottles to be sold in Baghdad as part of the rebuilding effort in that country.

A feature article on Jerry Gaffney Ministries www.annointed.net reads, "Some have asked the questions, because it has been reported that the captors may have demanded that no one be contacted and no prayer go up for Jeffrey. One source has said the Muslim captors want the Christians to back off for now so they can get their ransom money."

The Associated Press (AP) reported that organizers of the candlelight vigil told reporters Friday morning that the vigil planned that night in a city park was needed to show Ake's family the community is behind them.

Cancellation Notice (via www.annointed.net)

But just before noon, the AP reported, the mayor's office announced the cancellation. A sign was hung on the door of City Hall which said "a statement will be made at a future date."

United Methodist Pastor David Tripp, who was one of the organizers of the prayer vigil, told WDNU TV (www.wndu.com/news/042005/news_41587.php), "The reasons (for the cancellation) are obviously very pressing and the mayor of LaPorte doesn't change plans like that without good reason."

Some area residents speculated that the cancellation, WDNU reported, was at the request of the state department, while others thought it was at the request of the family.

The gathering was being organized by the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce, the mayor's office, the Rotary Club and the town's local ministerial association.

A Supportive Sign on the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce Web Site

Gaffney, whose Internet prayer watch is ongoing, said in the same article, "Even though the prayer vigil may have been canceled, they can't stop us from praying."

Gaffney did not immediately return a telephone call or respond to an e-mail asking about the comments on his web site.

Ake was seen holding last Wed, two days after his abduction, on a videotape aired by Al-Jazeera television (http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/CBACAB0D-1FAE-4BBE-9565-A34B59144DD1.htm ).

Jeffrey Ake

The tape, Al Jazeera reported, showed Ake sitting behind a wooden desk and holding what appeared to be a passport and photo identification, as three men pointed their guns towards him. Ake pleaded with the US administration to open a dialogue with the "Iraqi resistance" and to work towards saving his life. Ake also urged American forces to leave Iraq.

Aljazeera commented that Ake's statements seemed to have been made under what it called "abnormal circumstances."

Aljazeera did not air the audio portion of the video or say how it obtained the tape.

Few if any people would die right away. But the loss of power would have a cascading effect on all aspects of U.S. society. Communication would be largely impossible. Lack of refrigeration would leave food rotting in warehouses, exacerbated by a lack of transportation as those vehicles still working simply ran out of gas (which is pumped with electricity). The inability to sanitize and distribute water would quickly threaten public health, not to mention the safety of anyone in the path of the inevitable fires, which would rage unchecked. And as we have seen in areas of natural and other disasters, such circumstances often result in a fairly rapid breakdown of social order.

Excellent link Selene.

a Syrian with dual citizenship in the United States.

Some are concerned about too much government when it comes to personal lives, but many with DUAL CITIZENSHIP are NOT loyal to this country, and may, in fact, be excellent terrorism candidates. Hoping the powers that be are, as we speak, investigating those with dual citizenship from countries with high anti-American sentiment. Better safe than sorry!

Hmmm...Even though this is a call center-related scam; reminds me of the Nigerian scammers.

I get 2 or 3 of those a day in my e-mail.
They come from a number of countries

Palestinian girl hides gun in undies

If the strip-searches start, there will be international howls of protest. But what else can be done in the face of this? From YNET, with thanks to Gabrielle Goldwater:

NABLUS - Troops searching a West Bank house for a wanted Hamas gunman found his sister hiding his gun in her underpants, the army said, adding that it would consider renewing strip-searches among Palestinian women when searching and screening for potential terrorists.
The soldiers in the Balata refugee camp, a terrorist hotbed, found the gunman inside his house and ordered him to surrender his weapon. He refused, saying he didn't have it. After questioning, they found the man's sister had hidden it her underwear.

Troops then arrested the Hamas terrorist. They also found a gun holster and bullets inside the building.

An army spokesman said the incident raises serious questions about the need to search Palestinian women, mainly at checkpoints.

"Until now we have gone easy on women," a spokesman said. "Perhaps we need to reconsider that policy."

Must be a delayed thought process ~ speculating female suicide bombers weren't incentive enough?
