Two of my grandchildren have learning disabilities. Their mother (who never should have) homeschooled them and it was a disaster. Now they're really struggling.

Do you use diet restrictions with your ADD child? That often helps where medication doesn't. Maryxxx

No, I didn't use diet restrictions, per se. My daughter who is now 23 was strictly ADD, not ADHD. IQ 136 +/- 4 points. She was lethargic - almost catatonic at times. Very spooky. Either so completely absorbed in something that it was dangerous, or too fractured to focus. I did keep red dye and sugar away from her.

Marysecretary, my other daughter who is now 17 is MID - mildly intellectually disabled. Her IQ is about 70. Having lived through my first daughter's special ed experience, where she was labeled slow and stupid, my message to the school system regarding my second daughter was: I don't care about academics; I just want her self-esteem intact and healthy when she leaves the 1-12K educational world. In other words: Keep your hands off my daughter's psyche!

So far it's worked, and my 17 year old is more prepared than my 23 year old.

My 23 year old took Ritalin etal. My 17 year old's problems are not affected by meds.
