Hmm, where's the immigration heroine to some on FR, hillary?

She has not given any support to the minutemen.

These vigilante groups are emboldened by political demagogues who, for example, file federal legislation allowing bounty hunters to pursue immigrants.

Bounty hunters going after immigrants? Shouldn’t that read criminals? The last I heard, there was no bounty on legal imigrants.

Many in the anti-immigration movement feel we cannot reform the immigration system until we get control of our borders.

I don’t believe many are “anti-immigration”, but are against illegal entry.

However, since our system does not provide opportunities for legal immigration, people are pushed underground.

????

That is all I could read. The writer for the Boston Globe is so far out of touch with reality it is frightening.

Invoking symbols ranging from the Revolutionary War to Martin Luther King Jr., armed vigilantes are patrolling a segment of the Arizona-Mexico border and taking the enforcement of immigration law into their own hands.

Invoking symbols ranging from the Revolutionary War to Martin Luther King Jr., first amendment rights armed vigilantes are patrolling a segment of the Arizona-Mexico border and taking the enforcement of immigration law into their own hands Ali Noorani takes pen in hand and plays fast and loose with the truth.

While they claim only to offer support to the Border Patrol,

They're not "claiming" to support the Border Patrol, they are supporting the BP

The edge of a cliff? If so, somebody give 'em a shove.

...human rights activists have flooded the area,

They're always such a help. (/sarc)

...and President Bush has distanced himself from the effort.

Right after he called them vigilantes.

Such individuals have no interest in our national security and are willing to dismiss America's values and history for the sake of political gain.

It's time that Americans directly address the ridiculous line of thinking made by advocates for unfettered immigration that asserts the "right" of every foreign individual in any foreign land to make some future claim to enter the US as an immigrant. The Constitution does not specify this "right". In fact, there have been many instances in the past where the American government restricted immigration in attempts to control the inflow of the numbers and types of immigrants to serve a greater national interest. It seems to me that national security would demand that we address the unbelievable danger we have now with over 10 MILLION ILLEGALS hidden away, untracked and unchecked, in the corners of our society at this time. I now believe the Statue of Liberty was a Trojan Horse given to us by the nefarious French to undermine our society by bamboozling the American people with malevolent mythology about "Give me your tired, your hungry, your poor, etc..." becoming part of our national creed and driving the unlearned to expect that we have some sort of responsibilituy to accept the dregs of the whole world ad infinitum!

And that proves the point that they are not only offering support to the Border Patrol? What a classic example of not proving one's point but making it seem so through gross obfuscation.

Ali Noorani is the author. Some clown named Ali Noorani is going to tell me how to fix immigration fairly? He just got off the banana boat while my people have been here 100 years with many freepers much longer.

It is fair currently. This is our country. Mexico is their country. Now see that is fair.
If our government decides to start selectively enforcing laws that is dangerous. That border, like all others, was created through bloodshed. If that border is done away with the next border, like all others, will be created through similar bloodshed. I am not a Mexican, I am an American. I choose to live with Americans regardless of how many times Dane calls me a racist for it.

More reform that consists of essentially scrapping immigration controls. Guest worker programs have a bad history throughout history. The Germans were "guest workers (and soldiers)" in the Roman Empire right up to the time they sacked the place. Guest workers is a fraud since most of them will not leave and the government and people who support such programs have no intention of making them leave. Guest workers is a con phrase designed to cover support for open borders. After all, the govt. doesn't enforce the democratically passed laws on the books now, turns a blind eye to illegals, do you think they're going to get tough when the guest workers refuse to leave? Not to mention the lawsuits.

Er, Ali, we need not consider the "needs" of immigrants when enacting long overdue immigration law reform.

The only "needs" that matter are those of the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Many in the anti-immigration movement feel we cannot reform the immigration system until we get control of our borders.

Well, duh. There is a case to be made for allowing in a greater number of immigrants -- but it should be done honestly and aboveboard, not by simply letting people routinely ignore the law.
