The Ice Queen (A Day of 'Astonishing Put Downs' for Camilla Parker Bowles)
News of the World UK ^ | 4.10.05 | Clive Goodman

Queen Elizabeth II delivered some extraordinary wedding day snubs to Prince Charles and his bride Camilla Parker Bowles yesterday. Her gloomy Majesty barely cracked a smile throughout the day. She never spoke to her new daughter in law and wouldn't even look at her.

At one point, the Queen frostily turned her back on Camilla during the blessing of the couples marriage.

But the worst moments for the new Duchess of Cornwall came when it was time to take the traditional family photos on the steps of St. George's Chapel. Royal aides had expected the Queen and Prince Phillp to spend at least five minutes posing with the newlyweds.

But the queen barely managed to spare 52 seconds to stand alongside the happy couple. She did not say a word to Camilla, now the country's second highest ranking royal, but spoke to her son.

Queen: 'That all went rather well.' Charles: 'Yes.' Queen: 'We are leaving now.' Charles: 'Oh, I really want a picture of us all.'

The Queen then moved quickly to stand further away from her new daughter in law, stepping around her to stand beside Charles. It was a day of astonishing put downs for Camilla, 57, delivered by her mother in law.

One observer told us: 'If the Queen had been any quicker, the pictures would have to been done on a speed camera. She looked grumpy and frosty to the bitter end.'

There were mutterings among the female guests as the Queen broke the golden rule of weddings--upstaging the bride by wearing white. Her off white outfit was almost exactly the same color Camilla had chosen for her civil wedding.

One guest said: 'She didn't join in on any of the prayers or hymms, she looked miserable.' Then, as the congregation sang 'Love Divine,' she lowered her order of service and turned her back on Camilla--even Prince Phillip was forced to shoot her a look!

One family friend told us: 'It was tough on Camilla. It wouldn't have killed the Queen to say well done. Nobody expected her to throw her arms around the woman but she was very cold to her.'

Later, things appeared to have warmed as the Queen unexpectedly made a speech at the reception--but later than cracked a joke at Camilla's expense, appearing to compare her to a horse.

To laughter from the guests in the State Apartments, she told the newlyweds, 'Welcome to the winners enclosure!' Seconds earlier, she had told the crowd that she had an important annoucement to make and then declared who won the Grand National Horse Race.

I read that Diana wanted to back out of the marriage prior to its taking place, but her family put pressure on her and would not let her do it, nor would they support her in it. Then her brother gets up and makes that speech at her funeral bashing the royal family. The pot calling the kettle black!

I agree. Once married, a couple should work to maintain that marriage. Work through the problems and not give up just because they get tired of each other. However, an abusive relationship is another matter. Get out of that as fast as you can.

Camilla is now the Princess of Wales and she will be the Queen, no matter which titles she expresses a preference for at the moment to prevent a reaction.

Oh, there'll be a reaction...

Not funny! Making fun of someone's looks if junior high stuff.

Do you have a mirror? I do ! I have the looks God gave me and so does Camilla.

"I think that the Queen puts duty and country before anything."

Yes.

There was a time that I highly admired Elizabeth --- in her pre-queen years and early queen reign. But she seems straight and unbending. Even with her need to put duty and country above all else, she has not allowed her human side to be seen. She has grown into an old woman who seems unhappy and if that is so, it is she who has done it. Her family is proof of it. What an unhappy lot -- from her own position on down.

The comments on looks are interesting. They have been going on since Camilla emerged into the headlines. Since when do we question, or feel free to mock what God has given us? I surely hope she can rise above all the pettiness that is going on, and not allow others to drag her to their level.

Ice Queen?? More power to her!

That's really what makes me mad about this whole thing. If I'm him, I find a way to make that marriage work, I tell Camilla thanks for the memories and I don't look back. Unless Diana was a complete psycho, and somehow I don't think that marriage would ever have happened, would ever have been allowed to happen, if that'd been true. Sometimes the high, hard, lonely path of duty is neither all that lonely, nor even all that hard...if you're willing to put in the effort.

And yes, johnb838, I had a big crush on her, too. ;-)

His mother won't be around forever.

Well,I don't know----look at HER mother.

Princess Margaret,QEII's sister, also was in love with a commoner and had to marry someone else.

This entire royalty stuff is crap.

I am a big believer in lacking forgiveness for home-wreckers...

Diana did a wonderful job of wrecking her own home. She was nothing but a cheap slut who hit life's lottery big time, and then threw it all away on manic fits, eating disorders, and whoring around with the servants (among many others).

How sad you are.

Nope. Truthful. I have no stars in my eyes about Diana.

If she cared about giving monarchy a chance to succeed and continue, she would let her son spend his adult years as king. But she doesn't.

Then I guess it is Charles' fault for giving it to her in the first place.

I've read several books about Diana and according to one she did find out about C & C and briefly considered calling it off. Her sister told her, "It's too late...they can't take your face off the tea towels now."

Maybe one of the British Freepers could clarify this, but couldn't Elizabeth II abdicate in favor of William if she wanted to?

Maybe one of the Catholic Freepers could clarify this, but couldn't the Pope have abdicated in favor of a Cardinal he prefered if he wanted to?

Charles dated Diana's older sister. The families knew each other way back.

Did that crest belong specifically to Diana? Does anyone know?

Prince of Wales Feathers. His crest. He can put it on anything that is "his".

So "ya boo-sucks to you. Rupert Murdoch"

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that Camilla wore a light grey suit to Charles' and Diana's wedding.

But isn't this supposed to be a morganatic marriage, one where she can't lay claim to titles or property?

The "Duchess of Cornwall", and "Her Royal Highness" (a style within the gift of the Queen), kinda puts the lie to that theory.
