Strong Quake Hits Near Indonesian Island
St.Cloud Times online edition ^ | Apr 10, 8:10 AM EDT | AP

HONG KONG (AP) -- A strong earthquake hit Sunday near the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Hong Kong seismologists said. The 6.8-magnitude tremor's epicenter was about 74 miles southwest of Padang, a city in western Sumatra, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The quake was recorded at 6:35 a.m. EDT, it said.

Sumatra was devastated by the Dec. 26 tsunami and earthquake that killed nearly 183,000 people in 11 countries and left another 129,000 missing.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, was the hardest hit, with at least 126,000 people killed and more than 500,000 left homeless, mostly in Aceh province on Sumatra.

"earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do".

Okay. That's easy to solve. Buildings should be outlawed. Then earthquakes could just run rampant, and no one would be hurt by them. :o)

Then, since guns don't kill people, people do, then people should be outlawed. Heh. Heh.

Did you ever see that PBS special on the eruption of Pinatubo? The interviews with the scientists were impressive....especially when they realized that their reporting stations were disappearing during the big eruption. The line of failed stations was approaching them!

Pucker factor.

Seriously, though, since it can't be about earthquake prevention, it's got to be about mitigation. That's something folks have to keep in mind if they want to build/live/work there.

Yes, they do appear to be moving in a South-SouthEast direction. Hopefully it is just the fault line still releasing energy from the big one in December.
